West Side Story (2021) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Legendary director Steven Spielberg proves with his remake of West Side Story that it’s possible to be blown away by the technical and performance successes of a film without actually falling in love with it.  In fact West Side Story is probably the ONE film that I’ve watched in 2021 (okay other than Dune) that commands that you watch it on the big screen.  It’s what cinema is about, helped in no small part by the masterful combination of Spielberg and his long time cinematographer Janusz Kaminski as they faithfully recreate the look and feel of an old Hollywood studio picture.  Even the cast are uniformly good – with Ansel Elgort  and Rachel Zegler lighting up the screen with their throughly believable forbidden romance. But yet I just didn’t fall in love with the film as much as I wanted (or should have) and that, probably, lies more with me than the film as my musical taste is more in line with the Hamiltons, the In The Heights and the Matilda’s of the world. But either way if you are a fan of film then West Side Story is one you should not miss on the big screen.

Best Bit: The film LOOKS amazing.
