Phil's Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Best & The Worst TV Shows of 2021

2021 was another great year for TV – with HBO finding its form and Squid Game nominating Netflix.  Here’s my lost and the 5 best and a handful of Worst TV shows of 2021…

(As of writing this Wheel Of Time, Squid Game, BMF and a few others have alluded me!)

The Must Watch…

TV Show of the year: Mare Of Easttown

Compelling, smart, funny and shocking… Mare Of Easttown managed to be all things to all people. A real return to form for HBO – a mystery thriller that delivered on the mystery AND the thrills.

2. Hacks

In Brief:  Funny, cutting, emotional and dark.  Hacks was one of the TV surprises of 2021.

3. Cobra Kai: Season 3

In Brief: There is no earthly reason why Cobra Kai season 3 should be as good as it is.  Yet it REALLY is. And even better the more it plays to the past the better it gets.

4. Sex Education: Season 3

In Brief: Another show that shows no end of letting us down, Sex Education returned for one of its best season yet.  It’s funny, smart and deals with a whole range of serious issues without ever loosing its charm or needing to lecture.

5. Clarkson’s Farm

In Brief: Yes really.  This insightful, well paced and throughly entertaining documentary series captures ,many peoples hearts when it aired in 2021.  Like the man or not he’s done more for farming in 8 episodes than the UK has for many years!

Bubbling under: Formula 1: Drive to Survive : Season 3, Masters of the Universe: Revelation (Part 1),  Chucky, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Heels, Loki, Shadow & Bone, The War Of The Worlds

The Must Nots…

Miss of the year: Invasion

In Brief:….. I lasted one episode.  This should have been great.  A grown up, mature take on War of The Worlds with Apple money and a strong set of creatives.  But The first episode was so dull I just couldn’t see myself investing in the show any further.

The near-miss: Vigil

In Brief:….. It started REALLY well but  after 6 episodes had passed and the plot become more convoluted than The X-Files.  I just didn’t care anymore.

Other shows I checked-out on this year: The Walking Dead: World Beyond (Season 2), Fear The Walking Dead (Season 7), Day Of The Dead
