Eternals (2021) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Eternals is probably Marvel’s least essential film, both in terms of the wider MCU as it stands today and, frankly, whether you should be bothered to watch it or not.  I get it – it’s massive story about celestials and the possible end of the world as we know it and it’s painting on one of Marvel’s biggest canvases to date but the film, as a whole, is almost TOO big to tie into the wider MCU and thus almost too big for me to care. Chloé Zhao was a strange choice of filmmaker to deliver this project, even by Marvel standards, but she has created a gorgeous film. But trying to introduce so many new characters in such an epic film leaves the movie with long sections of exposition and infrequent (and somewhat repetitive) action.  Even at early 3 hours this film seems underbaked.  Which brings me to my next point – this would have made an amazing 6-8 hour TV show, taking time to introduce each Eternal and giving us a reason to care about them.  As it as as certain story beats take place you cant help but shrug your shoulders and go… oh well.  It’s not all bad (in fact it’s not bad at all) but it just could have been so much more.  A rare miss for Marvel.
