The Devil All The Time (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Poor Tom Holland.  The guys super talented but he can’t seem to land a film outside Marvel that, so far, I’ve liked. Chaos Walking was weak and now The Devil All The Time ends up being yet another messy Netflix original – overlong, dull and nowhere near as good as it thinks it is.   Ultimately for a film with a pretty simple core narrative, it never seems in a hurry to get to its pretty obvious conclusion, instead languishing along several full stops and reflective moments when, with a lot of the fat trimmed, this could have been a more enjoyable film.  But maybe that’s the point – maybe you are meant to share the misery of it’s never happy lead characters in which case the film succeeds. In spades.  Technically good but emotionally unengaging.

Best Bit: Holland is greta playing against type

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Avoid

If You Liked this Try: Chaos Walking, Cherry, Spider-Man: Far From Home
