You Only Live Twice (1967) – A 007 Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
You Only Live Twice is, in a few words, batshit mental. From volcano hideaways, space ships and ninjas to Bond becoming ‘Japanese’… it’s the most Roger Moore Bond film that Moore never made.  It’s also firmly the inspiration for another spy franchise that would follow (oh BEHAVE!).  BUT it’s also a LOT of fun (if you can put aside some of the early Bond’s worst tendencies and dubious politics).  You Only Live Twice feels like it should have been made just before (or after) Moonraker.  And there in the Bond cannon it would make total sense.  But following Goldeneye and Thunderball it makes no sense at all and sets Bond upon the path of excess and invisible cars that would blight later films.  Connery is obviously bored but he still turns up – even if he does look a little old for Bond by now.  So enjoyable for sure but also one of the least grounded Bonds yet.

Best Bit: Volcano!

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Stream

If You Liked this Try: Goldfinger, Thunderball, Moonraker
