Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The issue with Spiral: From The Book of Saw is that it so obsessed with being a Saw film that it quickly falls into all the trappings of the franchise (best and most often worst): from silly twists (this one here is so obvious I’d challenge anyone not to see it coming a mile off) and spooky puppets to senseless traps and improbable story logic – this feels like someone making a best of without only ever reading what the original was about. It’s not terrible – Rock is good even if he does fall into his Lethal Weapon character at times and the limited traps are fun and gruesome but Jackson is miscast and comes off little more than stunt casting and whilst the central concept is smart the execution just isn’t. As for the rest ? Poor script, choppy editing and a director who seems to have missed his latest persecution of Ritalin makes it hard to watch at times. Ohhh and please can I never see a shouting police captain again.
Best Bit: The traps, as always.
Cinema, Stream, Avoid: Cinema (but only to support cinemas being back, the film is stream worthy)
