Cruella (2021) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Prequels can be dodgey ground.  For every Joker there’s 10 (or more) Prometheus’s.  But from the first trailer I saw for Cruella I just had a feeling that we were in safe hands. How right i was. Cruella is brilliant fun – from it’s cast (the two Emma’s especially) and memorable characters to it’s stunning production design and Scorsese/Tarantino inspired musical stylings – this is a confident, bold and often quite dark telling of the origin of one of cinema most iconic baddies.  But oddly the film it has most in common with is Todd Phillips Joker – not just as a prequel but as a piece of work that transcends its seemingly limited idea. Yup it’s overlong but I truly didn’t care – Cruella is the film I needed right now and one that deserves to be seen on the BIG screen.

Best Bit: Probably the soundtrack

Cinema, Stream, Avoid: Cinema

If You Liked this Try: 101 Dalmatians (1996), 101 Dalmatians, Joker
