Raya And The Last Dragon (2021) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Raya And The Last Dragon may have ended up as A Disney Plus Premium access movie, but it was a film very much designed to see on the big screen.  A often darker take on the standard Disney formula, this animated feature is often bold, often predictable but never not entertaining.  The challenge for Disney is that they have found a winning formula – cute side kicks, strong female leads, top notch voice cast, dead parents (Seriously what is it with Disney killing off grown ups) – but this can risk the films feeling a touch predictable.  And for sure Raya offers no real surprises.  From the moment it starts you know how it will end. But does it matter of the journey to get there is entertaining? For now maybe not but I cant help but feel Disney needs to mix up the formula a bit (see how Pixar constantly do this) before they risk diminishing returns.

Best Bit: The animation is superb
