Do The Right Thing (1989) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Not sure why I’d never seen Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing but for some reason it was a film that passed me by. Lee’s honest, funny and charming film takes a dark turn into far too familiar territory.  Now watching it some time later it’s just how amazing that, post George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, just how current and essential the film feels today.  It’s also sad to see just how little racial politics and agendas have changed since the 80’s… what was current then is probably more so now.    A great cast, one of the best opening title sequences of a film ever and a shocking turn…. Do The Right Thing is and will sadly remain essential viewing for years to come.
