Under Siege (1992) – A Rewatched Quick Capsule Review

Under Siege (1992) – A Rewatched Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Under Siege was yet another Die Hard clone – this time it’s Die Hard… On A Boat.  With added Gary Busey.  At the height of his success Steven Seagal made what was then his biggest film and, to be fair to him, he’s never looked leaner or more sharp.  The central concept  is barking mad – former & current soldiers lead a hostile take over of a military ship for some reason that mostly you don’t care about.  Ultimately this is about Seagal being Seagal and beating the snot out of a LOT of bad guys. Which is something he does very well indeed.  There’s nothing new here, even for 1992, but years later the film still works well and is never dull.  So not groundbreaking but for sure it’s a whole lot of fun and well worth a rewatch.

Best Bit: Busey is obviously having the time of his life.

White House Down (2014) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

White House Down (2014) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
One of 2013’s biggest misses this arrived months after the hit that was Olympus Has Fallen to a chorus of meh!  But I have no idea why because, as an action film, it’s much better that Olympus, has it’s tongue firmly in cheeky and mangoes to deliver whilst never taking itself too seriously.  In fact White House Down is probably one of the best action films of 2013.  No Really.

Best Bit: President of the USA + Rocket luncher.

Executive Decision (1996) – A Quick Capsule Review

Executive Decision (1996) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Executive Decision is a classic 90’s action film – bombastic, silly and hugely over the top.  It’s also massively fun and immensity re-watchable. But it’s also a film that takes some risks – killing off one of your more bankable stars in Act 1 was bold and putting the film on the shoulders of Russell in a period he was making more serious dramas was inspired.  This really was a golden age for action – high concept films in a time before superhero would dominate.  That said the seeds of today’s superhero movie sit very firmly in this era – proper actors in action roles are now common place.  Executive Decision holds up well and is well worth a rewatch.

Best Bit: Seagal buys it!

Speed (1994) – A Classic Quick Capsule Review

Speed (1994) – A Classic Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Speed is one of the 90’s best action films.  And that’s saying something in a decade that gave us Point Break, Con Air and many more.  Director DeBont never topped his work here, a tight, tense, high concept premise that Reeves, Bullock and Hopper sold the shit out of.  What’s best about Speed is that years later (and this film was out in 1994) the film holds up so well.  Like Die Hard it’s a genre defining film that cemented Reeves and Bullock as stars.  Brilliant.

Best Bit: Pop Quiz Hot Shot…

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Die Hard like movies. aka “It’s Die Hard On A (Insert Place/Location/Item Here)

Close but no cigar: Cliffhanger (On A Mountain), Sudden Death (In A Stadium), The Rock (On Alcatraz), Air Force One (On Air Force One)

5 – Toy Soldiers
Die hard… In A School.  Much ignored 90’s action film aimed at kids.  Really good fun.

4 – Under Siege
Die hard… On a  Boat.  One of the better Seagal movies.  Which isn’t saying much these days.

3 –  Passenger 57
Die hard… On A Plane. Always bet on Black.  Actual line form the film.

2 – Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Die Hard… In a Airport. Darker, meaner but man it’s great.

1 – Speed
Die hard On A… Bus. The best Die Hard clone and a great film in it’s own right.
