In The Line Of Duty (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

 Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
In The Line Of Duty  feels like something that would have been better suited in the 90’s.  It’s just such an over the top, silly execution of a reasonable (but done so many time before central idea) that you wonder if you went to bed in a time machine and woke up in a sub-Shane Black movie. Lead Eckhart looks bored (and must be wondering how to fire his agent most of the time), the director is throwing in his best 90’s cliches (shouting police chief that never listens? Check!) and everyone else is wondering “Why the hell did I pay to see this”.  Okay so it’s not dull but man there is so little new here that you could rent or stream a hundred films that do it better.

Best Bit: The idea is kinda of okay

The Equalizer 2 (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

The Equalizer 2 (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The second Equalizer film is less than the sum if it’s parts. Denzel Washington is good value, Antoine Fuqu’s direction  is solid (and feels like he’s taking the place of the much missed Tony Scott) and the action clean and crisp.  Yet the film doesn’t work. The early sequences with Washington righting wrongs from the front of his Uber makes for a fascinating film but when the story hits proper and it ends up being yet another revenge action that we’ve seen a million times before.   It’s a shame because if they’d stuck with it’s early premise then The Equalizer 2 could have been really interesting.

Best Bit: The taxi stuff

Bright – A Quick Capsule Review

Bright – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Bright is Netflix’ $90 million big budget original sci-fi release, its gamble to try and take on the big studios at their own game.  The idea is great.  The execution sadly isn’t.  Bright is a high 15/low 18 rated sci-fi film that feels like it wants to be a kids film.  It’s an odd mix of Orc’s, fairies and elves with Training Day with added Will Smith.  But it’s rushed world building just doesn’t work and instead of being interesting it mostly comes off as hokey. Maybe as a TV series for sure but as a film this is a miss.

Best Bit: Visually nice

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
When a film wants so hard to be Heat or Training Day but ends up just being an aching mess of loud music and headaches.  Yes welcome to Sleepless, a total waste of talent and idea delivered with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the balls by a WWE wrestler.  A remake of a fair superior French film Sleepless Night, the story is delivered through a pass so pointless relentless you feel like you;ve been shouted at for 2 hours.  There are far better films out there.  In fact almost everything that’s been released this year.  One to miss.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So close yet so far… how do you take a good idea, an exceptional cast and a sometimes impressive director and end up with a tepid, disappointing and ultimately hollow film that’s much less than the sum of it’s parts?  Well thats the biggest mystery of all around Triple 9, the John Hellcat directed crime corruption thriller that, after it’s sub two hour run time, leaves you think: wow.  Wasn’t such and such cast member much better in that other film.

Best Bit: Winslett hamming it up
