The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
If you’ve seen other of the previous Lego films, The Lego Ninjago Movie will feel very familiar. That’s not a bad thing – after all it’s a format that’s worked for the video game franchises for years.   Yup it’s funny, silly and totally forgettable.  It’s also fair to say that it’s not going to challenge anyone’s brains but the film does feel a little like the returns are slightly diminishing after each new instalment with a degree of predictability setting in.  BUT kids will love it and it certainly passed the time…

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: 2017’s Superhero Films!

Close but no cigar: Wonder Woman, Justice League

5 – The LEGO Batman Movie
The LEGO Batman Movie isn’t quite as good as the original LEGO movie but in terms of jokes per second it pretty much delivers more than any film I’ve seen this year.  Smart, funny and very knowing.

4 – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2
GOTG2 was great fun that, on reflection, wasn’t quite as good as most of us originally thought falling apart somewhat in the final act.  BUT the journey to get there was damn good fun!

3 – Logan
Logan finally gave us the Wolverine movie we’ve been waiting for.  Violent, sweary and brutal it takes the Old Man Logan story and brilliantly puts it on screen.

2 – Thor Ragnorok
Damn Thor Ragnorok was good.  In the long run it may even pip Spiderman to the top spot here.  With an unusual choice of director, added Hulk and a witty script this was a Marvel film from left field that actually massively out delivered expectation.

1 – Spiderman: Homecoming
It’s been a long time coming but Spiderman: Homecoming gave us one of our best Spiderman films since, arguably, Spiderman 2.  Marvel delivered a charming coming of age Spiderman which was much closer to the original comic book.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Lego Batman Movie starts well with a very witty title sequence parody and an over the top action sequence featuring almost every Bat villain ever (even some you’ve never heard of).  The issue is that whilst it does continue to amuse, the film is too long and whilst it packs itself with jokes its more miss than hit.  This said Will Arnett’s Batman is a joy and Fiennes, Dawson and Cera offer excellent support.  It’s mad, it’s silly, kids love it and there’s enough batman jokes (from early Adam West era to Keaton and beyond) to keep adults entertained.

Best Bit: Bane.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Things like this either work REALLY well or fall flat. Thankfully what you have here is a rather brilliant (at times) revisit to what is by far one of the most fun periods of Batman ever!  Burt Ward and Adam West return, along with the original Catwoman Julie Newmar, for a jape filled retro Batman romp which at times is laugh out loud funny.  The ONLY issue here is that for me the joke wore out after a while and the film, even at just of 75 mins, still felt a little long.  That said it’s damn fun and seeing batman in space is a real highlight.

Best Bit: Burt Ward & Adam West.  Just devine!
