Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So most people would have seen a Shane Black film and probably never realised it.  A writer (and occasional bad joke teller is Arnie films) and then director, he’s not a house hold name.   But a few of us… well we’ve been all in from the start.  From lethal Weapon to The Last Boy Scout, Black’s films (as writer then latterly as a director) have uniformly been excellent, and often cornerstones to my teens.  SO I really look forward to Black’s films.  So with that much anticipation in mind I’m happy to report that  The Nice Guys does not disappoint and in fact as we stand today is probably the most enjoyable film I’ve seen in 2016 so far.  It’s bloody brilliant.  From script to direction, this film oozes cool, the kind cool that you can’t fake.  Add to that one of Russell Crowes best performances, Gosling on top form and an excellent support cast and you have a film that just delivers.

Best Bit: Gosling & Crowe

Phil’s Top 5… Shane Black Films

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Shane Black Films

“Who?” I hear your ask.  Well for a while Black was one of Hollywood’s best paid and most well known writers, and was in fact the Hollywood first writer to break a Million bucks on a spec script.  He almost single handedly re-invented the buddy cop genre with Lethal Weapon and went on to piss off millions of Marvel fans with his version of The Mandarin.   Yes, THAT Shane Black.  So here’ say Favourite 5 Shane Black films… (Predator didn’t count being that he was only in it for a small while!).

5 – Iron Man 3
Marvel took a chance and man did it land good.  Black made a very different Iron man than most expected and, whilst it wasn’t everyones taste, I loved it.  And THAT twist.

4 – Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Stepping up as a director for the first time, Black knocked it out the park and started the Downey Jnr come back. Best bit: Gay Val Kilmer.

3 – Long Kiss Good Night
Funny, smart and edgy – it defined Shane Black’s spot on action film writing style.  It’s a Duck not a Dick.

2 – Lethal Weapon
It redefined the buddy cop genre, cemented Gibson as a star and birthed a million copy cats.

1 – The Last Boy Scout
Back in the day when Bruce Willis was good (yes it did exist) this sharp as a tack buddy action film boasted one of the smartest scripts around.  Add some expert Tony Scott direction and you have a thrilling and fun action film.  And sadly one that flopped.  Audiences have NO taste.

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Bruce Willis films

Close but no cigar: Hudson Hawk, Die Hard 2, The Sixth sense, Die Hard With A Vengeance

5 – The Fifth Element
Mad, silly and OTT for sure, but The Fifth Element still remains Luc Besson’s second best English language film and one of Bruce Willis’ best films.

4 – 12 Monkeys
The marketing may have had this all about Brad Pitt, but Willis turns in a heartbreaking central performance.  The film still holds up and remains for me one of Gilliam’s greatest works.  Mon-KEY indeed.

3 – Pulp Fiction
A classic on every level, Willis plays ex-boxer Butch and like most of Willis’ best characters he’s another done of his luck I need to a break hard boiled kinda guy. Willis shines even in a film with so many memorable performances.

2 – The Last Boy Scout
Tony Scott & Shane Black teamed up to make a film everyone hated at the time and nobody went to see.  It had the most expensive script ever at the time and was bashed by critics.  Yet the film is one of Scott’s best, Willis is hardboiled at it’s best and Black’s script is razor sharp.  A classic.

1 – Die Hard
It’s Die hard on a… the film that launched a hundred copy cats for sure but even now not one can do it better than what is considered to be by many the best action film of all time.  Even years later it holds up.

Close but no cigar: The Hunger, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Unstoppable, Enemy of The State

5 – Crimson Tide
When Tony Scott did a Ridley Scott film.  Crimson Tide, with a script polished by Tarantino and a tour de-force showdown between Washington and Hackman, is a much underrated film.  Add in Scott regular Gandolfini and you have one of the best action thrillers of the decade.

4 – Man On Fire
From a career best performance by newcomer Dakota Fanning to a new hard edge action man Denzel Washington, Man Of fire is Commando for grown ups.  Super violent, a great script and pin sharp direction.

3 – The Last Boy Scout
A sharp Shane Black script, Bruce Willis on top form and the trademark moody visuals and uber violence, The Last Boy Scout gets better every time I watch it.

2 – Top Gun
Okay not everyone’s cup of tea for sure but Top Gun defined my youth.  It still has one of the definitive film soundtracks, the aerial combat scenes are unmatched years on and it’s an adrenaline ride of style over substance.

1 – True Romance
Simply put THE best Tarantino script and possibly one of best films Tarantino has been involved in (yes I probably do rate this above almost all his films).  Tony Scott brings style, a grade A cast and a great soundtrack to the uber violent love film.
