Sorry We Missed You (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Sorry We Missed You (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Whilst Sorry We Missed You isn’t quite at the level of the Loach’s earlier I, Daniel Blake it’s still a damning indictment of the UK gig economy and the impact it can have on those living on the bread line. As usually it’s Loach’s naturalistic style and performers that really bring the story to life.  There’s no flash camera tricks or editing – this is about reflecting the ills of society back at you in the most stark way possible.   And that it does.  Blake may have been a better film overall but Sorry We Missed You still has a lot to say and say it well it does.  Impactful then but also quite sobering.

Best Bit: Can you ever have a best bit in a Ken Loach Film?

Frank (2014)- A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What can you say about Frank other that… WFT? Yup Frank is one of those movies that is almost impossible to review.  Whimsical like a Wes Anderson film, with a bit of modern day Angel Share Ken Loach, a dash of Spinal Tap and Fassbender delivering one of his best ever performances even though you can’t see him for the bulk of the film… Frank is truly an original.  And it’s also funny, charming and well worth a watch. with excellent support from Gleeson, McNairy and Gyllenhaal. But make sure you are in the right mood because if your not then this could be a hard slog.

Best Bit: Fassbender delivers a masterclass

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
I, Daniel Blake is a tough watch.  Whilst it shows there is hope in the actions of others, it’s over arching presentation of a society so consumed by technology and so lacking in a human touch, you cant help but leave reflecting how life is so hard for some in life today. It’s powerful stuff.  That said it’s not without heart and laughs but the bleakness hits home from the start. If it has a problem it’s that it’s story beats are predictable but the film is so well played you forgive it for them.

Best Bit: The performances
