8: Aliens (1986) – Phil’s Top 10 Films

Hall of Fame Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Aliens is the template for how to make a sequel.  Whilst Alien was a sci-fi horror, Aliens is pure action wrapped in a sci-fi narrative.  And it works.  Up the Aliens, add in more cannon fodder and take Ripley from a victim to killer.  A quotable script, memorable characters and some of the most tense set pieces film has ever delivered.  Yup Aliens is that good.  Pretty much perfect.

10: Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) – Phil’s Top 10 Films

Hall of Fame Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a near flawless action film and one of the greatest sequels of all time.  It takes the formula set out in Cameron’s original Terminator film and flips it on it’s head.  It was the second time Cameron would make a sequel better than the original and in the process would revolutionise cinema forever.  CGI was here to stay.  Cameron has never topped Alien’s & Terminator 2 and it’s not hard to see why.  T2 is pulse pounding sci-fi action from start to finish. In short: it’s bloody superb.

Phil’s Top 5… Movie Trailers!

Phil’s Top 5… Movie Trailers!

Other Cr*p

Each week Phil takes a lookout a different movie related Top Five… this time out: Movie Trailers!

Close but no cigar:
Suicide Squad (Ballroom Blitz Trailer), Matrix Reloaded, Blair Witch Project, Psycho,

5 – Mad Max: Fury Road
Set the scene like no other and showed us why, after all these years, Mad Max could be great again.

4 – Star Wars The Phantom Menace
Simply put this trailer still sends goose bumps down my spine even though I know the film is utter crap.  Convinced a generation that Star Wars would be good again.

3 – Terminator 2 : Judgement Day
The trailer that defined a generation of filmmaking.  Simply put it’s note perfect for a note perfect film.

2 – Alien
Just a brilliant piece of marketing in an age when trailers were mostly just functional.

1 – Prometheus
This trailer was outstanding.  It marked us a film that we wanted to see, set the bar high and then the film… well… failed miserably.

Phil’s Top 5… Arnie Films!

Phil’s Top 5… Arnie Films!

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil takes a lookout a different movie related Top Five… this time: Top 5 Arnie Films

The Austrian Oak. The Govenator. Arnie. He was THE lynch pin of 80’s and early 90’s action films and constantly defied his critics but becoming one of the biggest box office stars ever.  He is, and remains, an institution.  Yup here are MY five favourite Arnie films.

Close But No Cigar: Terminator, The Running Man, Raw Deal

5. Predator

One of Arnie’s best 18 rated action films, Predator beings a touch of horror, a great support cast and probably one of cinemas great bad guys.

4. Commando

On every conceivable level Commando is terrible.  Yet Commando is also one of the best 80’s action films, with Arnie wiping out near nations of faceless bad guys to get back his Jenny.  Og and some of the best bullshit one liners ever…

3. True Lies

James Camerons last great film, True Lies took a French comedy film, added Arnie, some amazing action sequences and, er, Tom Arnold. Okay so it’s not ALL great but you’ve not watched a film until you see Arnie in a Harrier.

2. Total Recall

Get yourself to Mars indeed.  Based on a Philip K Kick story, this Paul Verhoeven (pre Showgirls) directed action sci-fi is a joy from start to finish with excellent performances (including the ledge that is Michael Ironside!)

1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

James Cameron’s epic sequel defines what a sequel can be as it successfully built on the narrative of the classic original whilst adding a compelling story, ground breaking FX and a good Edward Furlong performance.  No really.  Terminator 2: Judgement Day is essential.
