Action Jackson (1988) – A Quick Capsule Review

Action Jackson (1988) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Action Jackson is a top notch film.  It’s got everything – action, Al Leong, gratuitous nudity, synth music, familiar faces, Carl Weathers, a silly lead character name (Jericho ‘Action’ Jackson) quips, stunts and, of course, Vanity.  It’s screams the 80’s from every second of its tightly edited ninety minute run time.  It also has held up quite well, all things considered.  It’s odd that in the pantheon of great 80’s action films that Jackson it isn’t remembered more fondly.  Seek it out – it’s well worth it.

Best Bit: Weathers is superb

If You Liked this Try: Never Too Young To Die, Lethal Weapon 2, Tango & Cash

Tango & Cash (1989) – The Education Of Josh Quick Review

Tango & Cash (1989) – The Education Of Josh Quick Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Tango & Cash is an bang on 80’s classic.  The action is tight, the run time perfect and the chemistry between Russell and Stallone is almost unmatched.  In fact it’s so good I’m surprised they didn’t make more films together – I for one would even now (all these years later) would love to see a sequel.  Or a cross over with Lethal Weapon.  Anyway… Tango & Cash sails through on it’s charm and even now almost 30 years later it still packs it in spades.  A must watch for action fans.

Best Bit: The shower scene is hysterical

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Buy

If You Liked this Try: Cobra, Lethal Weapon 2, Beverley Hills Cop, Showdown In Little Tokyo

Phil’s Top 5… Rotten Movies That Are Actually Good

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Rotten Movies (from Rotten Tomatoes) That Are Actually Good

Close but no cigar: Three Amigos, Deep Blue Sea, Halloween 3: Season of The Witch, Miami Vice

5 – Tango & Cash (33%)
Come on 33%? Stallone and Russell are dynamite together and whilst yes teh script is cheesy this is quintessential 80’s buddy action at it’s best.

4 – Bad Boys (42%)
Critics obviously hate buddy buddy cop movies… Bad Boys has it’s flaws but Smith stamps his authority as a star and again the chemistry sells it. Great action also.

3 – Taken (58%)
Given a 1 star rating by a UK film mag, Taken is a solid 4/5 action revenge film.  It’s dirty, gritty and violent.

2 – Die Hard With A Vengeance (52%)
Yes the weakest of the original three Die Hard films but DHWAV (as nobody calls it) it again a cracking buddy buddy action film that has plenty of strong moments.

1 – Man On Fire (39%)
Well this is just crazy.  Man On Fire is arguably one of Tony Scott’s best films, one of Denzil’s best mainstream actioners and a cracking revenge thriller to boot.  It’s Commando for the modern generation.

Phil’s Top 5… Guilty Pleasure Films

Quick Review Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: My Favourite Guilty pleasure Films!

Close but no cigar: Anaconda, Grease 2, Tango & Cash, Masters Of The Universe

5 – Bad Boys
What ya gunna do? Bad Boys was a slice of 90’s action awesomeness with Will Smith making his big screen debut in an evolution of the Lethal Weapon idea of miss matched cops.  It works because Bay was limited by budget.

4 – Showgirls
It’s terrible yet brilliant at the same time.  The over acting, the terrible script, THAT pool s-x scene. Showgirls is a joy to watch.

3 – Con Air
Aaction film where there’s little action.  But man what a film.  A quotable script, an amazing cast and Nick Cage’s awesome hair.  One of THE best guilty pleasure films of the 90’s

2 – Cannonball Run
Burt Reynolds, some awesome cars and two of the Rat Pack reunited on screen, Cannonball Run is brilliantly enjoyable.  It’s terrible by most film making standards of course but it’s relentless fun wins you over.

1 – Top Gun
Come on was it going to be ANY other film. Top Gun is awesome.  The planes, the sound track, the camp, the cheese – it’s the bets of the 80’s. But look past that and you have a well crafted, expertly direction action film of the like we’ve never seen before.

One Sentence Reviews … Stallone Movies!

One Sentence Reviews … Stallone Movies!

Uncategorized

It’s back… The Good, The Bad & The Ugly One Sentence Review. And this time the spot light falls on Mr Sylvester Stallone.

Rocky
The Classic rags to riches story… unmissable

Get Carter
If you have any love for the original I beg you NEVER see this movie… EVER.

Cobra
Much milligned and forgotten Stallone classic… worth a re-watch.

Oscar
Funnier than you remember comedy of errors.

D-Tox
Terrible, dull action thriller that has neither enough action or thrills. One to avoid.

Judge Dread
Judged: Dreadful!

Rambo 3
Three times the action, three times the death, three times the stupidity… three times the mindless fun!

Demolition Man
Snipes! Bullock! Stallone! Leary! They don’t make them like this anymore…

Tango & Cash
The gayest straight guy action movie ever made as Stallone & Russell eye each other up in the shower. Odd.
