Good Boys (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
An ‘R’ rated teen comedy, Good Boys has received a fair share of mixed reviews and I can kinda see why.  Yup it’s funny, yup its crude and yup at times it’s even pretty charming. But also it’s lowest common denominator humour and for sure in a post #metoo world it may not be the best timed release.  But in the same way that American Pie pushed boundaries in the 90’s Good Boys does here and oddly for the most part its gender politics are far more interesting than some may give it credit for.  Best bet here is don’t do a Kermode… watch it and make up your own mind.

Booksmart (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Booksmart is one of 2019’s best films. I could stop the review there (after all what more do you need to know?) but there’s so much to shout about with this film I’d be doing it a massive disservice. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is a confidant, bold and at times brave coming of age comedy that rates up there as one of the best of the genre.  Whip smart, original and fresh Booksmart delivers a very modern perspective on a well told story.  But it would be nothing without the chemistry between leads Kaitlyn Dever & Beanie Feldstei who own the film, even managing to stand out from some superb scene stealing support acts from the likes of Billie Lourd. Not much else to say other than Booksmart is simply an essential film.  Watch it now.

Best Bit:Kaitlyn Dever/Beanie Feldstei chemistry
