IT Week: IT (2017) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Damn IT was scary.  Genuinely scary.  But those scares ONLY work because you believe & care for the Losers Club who are some of the most expertly drawn and directed characters I’ve seen on screen this year.  IT is a top notch King adaptation  (certainly Top 5 worthy) and an even better horror, leaving you crying out for the sequel which, sadly, is a few years off yet.  If you like King, horror or just scary clowns then IT is for you.

Best Bit: The losers are perfect

The Dark Tower – A Quick Capsule Review

The Dark Tower – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Dark Tower took a critical drubbing on it’s release – despite it’s literary pedigree and stellar cast – it didn’t land well.  It also came out within weeks of the vastly super adaptation of King’s IT.  Thing is it’s NOT as bad as you have been led to believe.  Yup it’s not great for sure but it’s also not boring, quickly paced and doesn’t outlive it’s welcome for the most part.  It does have issues – it’s a film put together in the edit suit that at times feels partly finished (the ADR for example is terrible).  But there are worse (and much better) films out this year and this probably shouldn’t trouble anyone’s best or worst list.

Best Bit: Idris Elba is good

Cell (2016) – A Quick Capsule Review

Cell (2016) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So Stephen King Films.  Not always a hit it’s fair to say.  Well The Cell sets a new bar for modern King adaptations.  Sadly it’s a very, very low one.  Coming across like 28 Days Later lite, Cell is just dull.  Poor effects work, cheap direction and at times as compelling as watching paint dry.  In fact I didn’t even notice that, an hour in, I’d picked up my phone and was answering a text I was so bored.  Yes this truly is a clunker with little to redeem itself. It’s not that the elements are wrong – Jackson & Cusack are fine, the book it’s based on very good.  It’s just that I, and seemingly the director, didn’t really care. Fan of the book? Steer clear.  Fan of horror films? Nothing to see.  Fan of rubbish King movies? Step on up…

Best Bit: Sam Jackson is okay.

Carrie (2013): A Quick Capsule Review

Carrie (2013): A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s all a bit of been there, done that with the latest reimagining of a horror classic.  As they mostly seem to be.  The biggest problem however with Carrie (2013) is that the usually excellent Chloe Moretz is lost at sea, be it through poor direction or just bad casting and being that the film’s success or failure heavily rests on her shoulders, that is an issue.  Add in an collection of faceless could be anyone ‘teen’ support cast and your left with a film that does nothing new, and what it delivers isn’t a patch on what was made before.

Best Bit: It’s pretty short.
