Prevenge (2017) – A ’31 Films Of Halloween’ Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Prevenge is a cracking independent pitch black horror comedy starring, written and directed by the actually pregnant Alice Lowe.  Seeking revenge for something from her past, Lowe’s Ruth brutally slays what at first look sleek a series of unconnected victims. But are they?  To be fair the why is kinda given away early on but the how, when and where?  That’s the best part.  Mixing brutal deaths with dark humour, Prevenge is one of the most unique films I’ve seen in a while and a real must watch.

High-Rise (2015) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
High Rise is based on an “unfilmable” book by  J.G. Ballard and directed by sometimes hit sometimes miss British director Ben Wheatley.  Based on this combination, it was most likely that this was either going to be one of the best films ever made or an epic failure. Truth is it falls somewhere between the two, with at times a foot in both camps.  Often at the same time.  Visually stunning and well performed, ultimately the film for whatever reason just didn’t connect with me.  The ultra violence wasn’t frequent enough, the oddness not odd enough and the boundaries just not pushed as much as you’d expect.  Some will love it however.  Sadly I wasn’t one of them…

Best Bit: Jeremy Irons is bat shit crazy

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Freefire is funny.  It’s clever. It’s exciting. And often it’s unique.  The problem comes in that it’s not enough of each of those to sustain even it’s skinny sub 90 minute running time. Yup this is classic Ben Wheatly – 50% an amazing film, 50% waffle or unfocused.  Thing is when the film sticks its landings it does it with style but by the end there was only so many betrayals, shoulder shots and swearing I could care about.  Innovate? For sure. Interesting? Yup. Good? Just about.

Best Bit: John Denver
