Zombeavers (2014) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Look let’s be honest Zombeavers is a terrible film.  Badly acted, average direction, few fresh ideas.  It’s very much a one joke film.  But hell what a joke.  I haven’t had this much fun watching a film in a long time.  You have to check your brain at the door for sure, but come on it’s ZOMBIE BEAVERS!!! What’s not to like?  Nudity, blood, outlandish bad guys… it’s like the 2014 travel back to the 90’s to get it’s groove back.  This isn’t for everyone but I enjoyed the hell out of it!

Best Bit: Zombeaver Humans.  or Humbeavers.

Phil’s Top 5… Shark Movies (Updated Inc. The Meg!)

Phil’s Top 5… Shark Movies (Updated Inc. The Meg!)

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Shark Movies

Close but no cigar: Jaws 2, Sharknado 2, Megashark Vs Giant Octopus, The Reef, Deep Blue Sea

5 – Open Water
Open Water is a cracking low budget shark movie that’s full of tension and tight direction. Another simple idea with a finned menace at it’s heart

4 – Sharknado
It’s a Shark.  Tornado.  A Sharknado.  Yup it’s cheap, yup it’s silly but man it’s so much fun!

3 – The Meg
Its dumb, OTT and pretty much everything you’d expect from a Jason Statham vs A giant shark movie. Yup.

2 – The Shallows
With one lead, a shark and a very simple premise The Shallows makes you not want to go back in the water all over again.

1 – Jaws
Was there EVER going to be another one? Jaws is a near flawless Shark movie. Even if the plastic Shark Bruce didn’t want to play ball..

Big Ass Spider: A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Not often do you get a film that so brilliant ‘does what it says on the tin’ but welcome then to Big Ass Spider a film about… well I think you can guess.  So cheesy dialogue, poor FX, Lloyd Kaufman cameo, mostly TV cast… it’s all here.  But you know what? It’s bloody good fun despite all that. Or maybe because of? Regardless this is a fun way to spend 90 mins.  It’s won’t linger much past the end credits but that’s not always a bad thing.

Best Bit: The opening. Actually quite brilliant.

The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
By all conventional (and much unconventional ) wisdom The Last Sharknado is a terrible film. The effects feel cheaper than ever, the acting often hits new lows (you forget that Tara Reid could actually act once) and the story could have been written on the back of a postage stamp that was already full of the plots for the previous Sharknado movies.  Yet I enjoyed the hell out of it, right up until it seems to run out of steam a bit in the last act.  You know what you are getting here and you either go along for the ride or check out before even starting.  Last Sharknado… yeah it’s probably about time but what a fun ride it’s been

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Global Swarming… Yup it’s back and this time it’s travelling across the Globe. It’s as insane as you’d imagine and oddly the rather bad Katie Price cameo isn’t the worst acting in it (Tara Reid who once shone in American Pie is beyond phoning it in these days).  Yup each country has it’s own unique set of cameos as the film goes from one set piece to the next, in one country to the next, with zero logic or story effort.  But who cares when it’s this fun. And it IS fun, probably the fact the most fun since the second Sharkndao film all those years ago.  It wont convert new fans for sure but as a piece of forgettable fun the Sharknado films always deliver.

Sharknado Week: Sharknado 4 The Forth Awakens – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Forth Awakens – Okay so this was the year that Sharknado finally jumped the shark, so to speak, but yet still it delivers on it’s frankly beyond stupid premise with more sharks and more ‘nados than ever before.  Go in expecting high art and yes you will be disappointed.  But come on it’s called Sharknado, why would you even do that? Go in expecting the forth Sharknado film and everything that comes with it  (not least a ludicrous amount of cameos) and you know what, you end up with one of the most gloriously fun films of the year.  Set brain to dumb.

The Meg (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Meg is kinda everything you’d expect from a Jason Statham Vs a bloody great Shark movie.  Okay… so the script needed more work and not all the acting lands even for a film of this ilk BUT everyone here knows the film they are making and give it their all on screen.  And it’s fun.  A lot of fun.  It’s also the film The Asylum (Sharknado and almost every Sharksomething Vs SomethingSomething) WISH they could afford to make.  Statham is great, the shark fully believable and the tongue firmly placed in cheek.  Well worth a trip to the cinema.

Best Bit: The dog.

Sharknado Week: Sharknado 2 The Second One – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
As you would probably expect Sharknado 2 is either the best film you’ve ever seen or the worst film ever made – depending on if you found the first one as genius as I did.  From Evil Dead references (several in fact) to off the hook performances, the worst CGI you have ever seen and an opening sequence so utterly stupid that it rates as possibly the best sequence in a film in 2014, Sharknado knows it’s dumb and naff.  And that’s kinda why it works.  It never takes itself seriously, relishes in it’s own stupidity and places it’s tongue firmly in cheek… which is exactly why this is one of the most enjoyable films of 2014 so far.

It aint the Godfather… but it also aint Tranfourhours 4.  Which is something to be grateful for.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Sharknado. Yes. Shark-bloody-nado. Hell I have ZERO idea what I can say about this film other than if you think the title sounds silly then this is a film you will hate with an extreme passion.  If like me the title sounds all manor of awesome, then there’s a lot to love in this knowingly cheesy, cheap as chips, barking mad Sharks in a tornado movie. For everyone else, I’d probably recommend avoiding this. Genius.  Mad genius.
