Creed 2 (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Creed 2 at times is lacking and for sure feels like a step down in quality when compared to the superior Ryan Coogler directed Creed.  That said just the nostalgia and concept alone (Drago’s Kid fights Creeds Kid)  is almost enough to guarantee it being worth a watch and somehow feels like a natural end to the franchise. And let’s be honest – there’s very little meat left on the bones of this story.  We’ve had Creeds Kid, Drago’s kid, Rocky’s Kid, we’ve had come backs and street fights… there’s nothing left to tell and I’m happy with that as, at this rate, Creed 3 could see us step back in to the (fun) but flawed late era Rocky films.

Best Bit: Training Montage

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Sports Underdog Films!

Close but no cigar: Kingpin, Tin Cup, Million Dollar Baby, Rocky Balboa, Moneyball

5 – Bloodsport
Yeah so Dux maybe a martial arts expert, but chased by the military, entering a no hold barred tournament never won by a Westerner  before, the odds are firmly stacked against him.  Love Bloodsport.

4 – Cool Runnings
A true (ish) story, Cool Runnings is one of the most unbelievable stories ever told.  Featuring a great cast (including the late John Candy) it’s a heart warming tale.

3 – Major League
Cheesy for sure.  But when Wild Thing kicks in, there’s not one person watching the film that doesn’t feel their heart pounding.  Charlie Sheen’s never been better.

2 – Rocky
THE sports underdog film, still rating up there as one of the greatest films of it’s time.  An Oscar winner with a career defining performance at it’s core… few top it.

1 – The Karate Kid
For me, even more so that Rocky, The Karate Kid is the quintessential sports underdog film.  Greta montages, cheesy music and Elisabeth Shue.  Say no more.

Bleed For This – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Bleed for This is flawed for sure, much like it’s protagonist.  But, much like it’s protagonist, Bleed for this is also worth giving a chance to.  This true life story of a boxer coming back from career ending injury offers nothing you haven’t seen before but the cast is great and Miles Teller once again stands out. Eckhart offers excellent support and director Ben Younger finally once again lives up to the promise of 2000’s Boiler Room.  Well worth a watch

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Well few people saw this coming 10 years ago when the Rocky franchise was languishing in oblivion.  Yes years after most people forgot about Rocky films firstly we had Rocky Balboa (which is exceptional and a step above Creed… just) and now Creed a sequel/franchise reboot that gives you everything you love about the Rocky Movies (training montages, OTT fights, camp) and adds what could be a career best for producer Stallone (not writing or directing for once).  Creed is exceptional and works both as a sequel and the launch of a franchise of its own.

Quick Review Year In Review

Film of The Year: Bourne Supremacy (9/10)
In Brief:  I had low expectations, liking but not a massive fan of the first 2. I was blown away with its story, action and performances.

2. Transformers
Why It was good: Because against all odds (toy adaptation, Michael Bay directing) this film was simply brilliant, delivering and then some.

3. Rocky Balboa
Why It was good: Stallone returns and brings pathos, heart and soul along with him. A feel good movie like they just don’t make any more.

4. Knocked Up
Why It was good: When a film arrives with so much hype, normally it’s a let down. Not so with Knocked Up, the funniest, warmest and most honest film of the year!

5. Grindhouse
Why It was good: Because it was Tarantino & Rodriguez both on superb form, once again making movies I love to watch!

Bubbling under:
Death Sentence (8/10); Ratatouille (8 /10); Hot Fuzz (7/10); 300 (7/10); 28 Weeks Later (7/10)
