Ready Player One (2018) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Ready Player One (2018) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Tonally Ready Player One is a bit of a mess.  The humour doesn’t always work alongside the darker story undertones and the amount of swearing is very unusual for a Spielberg film.  This all said – Ready Player One is visually stunning and as you’d expect the direction is first class, showing once again that Spielberg is still one of the best directors working today.  The cast are generally good as well but personally I’m getting a little bored with Mark Rylance’s increasingly one note mumbling’s.  But it’s the cameos you’ll remember – everything from the Iron Giant to the Delorean and a million more.  Ultimately Ready Player One is a geeks paradise that’s good enough to paper over it’s cracks.

The Big Short (2015) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Big Short is an exceptional dramedy (yes I hate that term also) about the financial melt down of 2007/8.  What makes it really work (except some exceptional performances) is both it’s lightness of touch on such a dour subject and it’s ability to make you actually understand what is going on.  Clever, well directed and fun.  Overall one of the years best films so far…

Best Bit: Margot Robbie cameo.

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Restrepo is a powerful and unique look at the front line of the US’s war against terror in Afghanistan.  A brutal and at time heart breaking look at war and conflict, at loss and what we do to get us through the day.  It’s at times hard to watch – soldiers, children, insurgents lying dead at the hands of each other but it’s also a must see.

Best Bit: The personal look

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What a film.  Mark my words if not the film of the year Whiplash will certainly be up there on a very short list.  From top notch performances, some of the best use of editing and music I’ve seen in a long time and with a story and characters you buy into 100%, cinema doesn’t get any more enthralling than this.  Can’t recommend this enough.

The Secret Life Of Pets (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

The Secret Life Of Pets (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Secret Life of Pet’s is basically Toy Story without Pixar.   That’s not a bad thing of course but it does feel like somewhat of a retread of the much better Pixar classic.  It’s charming, funny and (occasionally) smart.  It’s also not as funny as it should have been, not as clever as you want it to be and not as charming as it thinks it is… which is a shame as the film has bucket loads of potential. Ultimately the kids will love it, adults with find it witty and it will make money.  Hopefully of the sequel they can develop the bits that worked best into a what could be a comedy gem.

Eddie The Eagle (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Eddie The Eagle (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Starring the guy from Kingsman, alongside Wolverine and Christopher Walken, directed by the bloke from Press Gang in a story about a British downhill skier form the 80’s. Well that’s a pitch meeting I’d like to have been at!  Joking aside what a lovely, charming and sweet film it ended up.  Egerton is perfect as the hapless ‘Eagle’, able backed up in film and on screen by a Hugh Jackman playing very much against type.  Sure it may be a little too saccharin for some and there is only so many times you can see someone skiing down hill, but Eddie The Eagle gets it spot on for the most part. Much like the man himself.

London Has Fallen (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

London Has Fallen (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Where as ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ was a fun if silly action film, London Has Fallen ejects all that was pleasurable about the original and replaces it with poor cgi, a terrible over ernest script and Gerard Butler pissing away any last resemblance of talent he had left.  A dirty, violent and nasty film with pretty dubious ethics at it’s heart. Yet there were was some quite enjoyable moments and for all the things it does bad, the moments it get’s right are well handled.  And if nothing else you an laugh at Butler delivering some of the worst lines ever committed to an action film… it’s all pretty pointless but there are worse films out there.

Roxanne (1987) – A Hall of Fame Quick Capsule Review

Hall of Fame Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Roxanne is probably one of my favourite Steve Martin films.  For sure it’s not his most critically loved, his funniest or even the best made.  But this modern day (well 80’s) take on Cyrano de Bergerac manages to bottle up Martin’s charm and serve it perfectly for 95 minutes straight.  It’s warm, charming and never less than entertaining. Roxanne was a film for everyone who grew up being told they weren’t attractive or handsome enough, that showed that looks were only skin deep and personality and humour could always win the day.  A better message you will rarely find…

The Lady In The Van (2016) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
As seems to always be the way now, one of the best films of the previous year ends up being British and one that I miss on it’s release (See Pride and Sunshine On Leith).  It’s also simply amazing that Maggie Smith didn’t get at least an Oscar nomination being that she delivers what is probably one of the best performances of the year (and her career). This is Maggie Smiths film and she owns ever second she’s in.  That said the rest of the cast fair pretty well and the story, as quickly delivered as it is, is compelling and charming enough to make this one hell of a film overall.

2 Lava 2 Lantula (2017) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s not winning any Academy Awards but 2 Lava 2 Lantula is fun, silly and hilarious with a surprisingly knowing script that manages to comically reference a host of 80’s and 90’s films and TV shows with style and charm.  Guttenberg is terrible, the cast seem lost half the time and the effects are shoddy.  BUT it’s more fun than the last 3 Transformers movies combined and if you are in that kind of mood few films will hit the spot better.  Enjoy with curry and beer.
