A Good Woman Is Hard To Find (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
A Good Woman Is Hard To Find almost doesn’t work. It’s very much a film of two performances: Sarah Bolger is excellent in the career making lead role and the film is tense as hell with a suitably satisfying final act.  In fact it’s fair to say that Bolger makes this film, giving a credible and impressive central performance.  On the other hand you have Edward Hogg who delivers a frankly bizarre performance as the lead antagonist and, at times feels like he’s in a different film.  It just doesn’t work.  Add to this a few characters choices which seem totally left field and you have a film that often walks a very fine line.  This all said director Abner Pastoll does a good job with the more bloody moments however and the film remains suitably shocking and captivating.

Death Wish (2018) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Death Wish (2018) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It goes without saying that this remake of Charles Bronson starring Death Wish is inferior in every-way to the original.  And that’s saying something because whilst the original has a raw charm it’s fair from perfect.  The issue here is the film – from it’s direction by Eli Roth, it’s script by Joe Carnahan, to its cast – it just feels flat.  Willis in fact looks bored for the most part and for a sub two hour film it takes forever to get going. It’s not bad but there are so many better films you can watch and so many better revenge films.

Best Bit: The gunshop payoff

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Into The Ashes does the near impossible feat of making a film starring Frank Grillo boring. Honestly so little happens in what is ultimately just a threadbare revenge film that you kinda wonder how they even managed to get it to just over 90 minutes. There are just so many better films of this type out there that I just can’t recommend you spend your time on it.  Massively disappointing.

Best Bit: Grillo, obviously

The Equalizer 2 (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

The Equalizer 2 (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The second Equalizer film is less than the sum if it’s parts. Denzel Washington is good value, Antoine Fuqu’s direction  is solid (and feels like he’s taking the place of the much missed Tony Scott) and the action clean and crisp.  Yet the film doesn’t work. The early sequences with Washington righting wrongs from the front of his Uber makes for a fascinating film but when the story hits proper and it ends up being yet another revenge action that we’ve seen a million times before.   It’s a shame because if they’d stuck with it’s early premise then The Equalizer 2 could have been really interesting.
