The Boxtrolls (2014) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
In this day and ace of CGI animation all looking the same, it’s easy to forget how much effort goes into making a film like The Boxtrolls. That effort doesn’t make it a good film however,.  For that you need top quality voice acting, a good director, innovative and exciting set pieces, a dark humour and a cracking script.  Which is lucky because The Boxtrolls has all this in spades. Okay so it’s not as good as Coraline for me but that’s only because that film was so good.  The Boxtrolls is a joy – just be weary at times it was far too much for my 5 year old daughter to take.

Best Bit: Kingsley is superb

Avengers Week: Guardian’s Of The Galaxy – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

With Avengers: Infinity War opening this week, Phil’s Quick Capsule Review will be rerunning the reviews of some of our favourite Marvel Films!

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Okay let’s get this out the way early doors: this film is awesome.  In fact it’s probably top 2 or 3 of Marvel movies to date as well as being the most fun and enjoyable film of 2014.  Quite simply director James Gunn delivers in a film that most people had written off before the first frame was ever shot.  The characters connect (Rocket Racoon is simply genius), Chris Pratt stamps his mark as a leading man and the otherworld setting makes for a nice change from the usual Earth bound superhero movies.  The action works, it’s funny as hell and, quite frankly, if you heaven seen this you are missing out.  Big time.

Best Bit: Rocket Racoon

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Be it Tim Burton’s or Henry Selick’s  TNMBC (and for the record writer, producer and ideas man Burton has both his style and sensibility plastered all over this film), now in it’s 21st year since release the film hasn’t missed a beat in the interviewing years.  Okay so the technology has improved (just witness the quantum advance of The Boxtroll’s for example) but what still makes this film a class act is the collection of great songs, memorable characters and perverse humour that is seen so rarely in cinema these days.  It also shows just how far Burton has fallen since his 90’s heyday.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So Jon Favreau leaves behind the big budget world of marvel and returns back to his Swingers routes with a low budget script led dramedy and ends up delivering a brilliantly entertaining, witty and heartwarming tale of a man, food and a kid.  He also stacks the film with some excellent performances (his own included) as well as a host of fun cameos from the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and Robert Downey Jnr.  Add to that the soundtrack of the year and a film that is never once boring and you have a real return to form for the once Indie director.  Charming.

Best Bit: Soundtrack

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
If you haven’t heard of Dead Snow it was one of a slew of Zombie Nazi movies from a few years back, along side Outcast and others.  Dead Snow 2 picks up almost immediately after the first film and turns the dial way up to 11.  Tanks. Russians. Zombie Hoards,  Haunted arms. Children killed. Zombie Sex. Black humour. Blood. Gore. It’s all here and whilst the film doesn’t totally work, when it does it’s so barking mad that if you’ve ever watched and enjoyed an Evil Dead film you’ll be right there with it with a large smile on your face.  Nuts.

Best Bit: The Sex Scene. Just ugh!

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Oh my. This film is not going to be to everyone’s taste.  Over the top, stupid, totally ridiculous and with a central villain performance from Sutherland that rates as one of the strangest and daft of the year.  YET.  Yet I actually really enjoyed Pompeii, even with my less than stellar support of Paul WS Anderson’s sketchy career to date.  It’s hokum sure, but it’s fun… unpretentious fun and just for that the film deserves to be watched.  Harrington is fine (although it’s not a great stretch from his Game Of Thrones Character), Browning looks bored for most of the film but to be honest it’s the effects and action that everyone’s come to see and that delivers. Ignore the critics… give it a go!

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Sin City A Dame To Kill for wasn’t a film I as looking forward to.  Whilst I liked and positively reviewed the original I have ZERO interest in rewatching it and Millers follow up The Spirit was horrid. Oh and Rodriguez has forgotten how to make a good film. So It’s with surprise that I say SC: ADTKF is actually quite good fun.  It’s still style over substance for sure, but damn it looks pretty and for once it’s nice to see a film so strikingly different from the norm.  It still suffers from some odd pacing issues and Jessica Alba offers little in the realms of actual acting (pouting being her go to mode) but overall it’s a film I enjoyed.

Best Bit: The Look.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
VHS was the moment that movies became available to everyone and the business of movies jumped up a gear.  Rewind This is an affectionate look back at those heady days of the dawn of the VHS era, an era which quite frankly changed the world forever.  Looking at the social, economic and personal impact, it’s a fascinating look back both for children of the 80’s and for those retro hounds that wish they were there but weren’t.

Best Bit: VHS!
