Peter Rabbit – A Quick Capsule Review

Peter Rabbit – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s a shame that Peter Rabbit takes so many missteps because, at it’s heart, it’s got all the pieces in place to have been a good film. This said Sony need some serious guidance on how to script edit – there’s no way the berry sequence (which sees a man who is allergic to berries almost killed) should have got past the first draft, if even that.   Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson are good as the lead humans but James Cordon just gets grating as the titular character, who itself i possibly the least likeable animated character in some years.  All this is kind of a mute point however as my daughter loved the film.  So one for the kids then…

Best Bit: The CGI effects are outstanding

Phil’s 5 Best Films of 2017

Phil’s 5 Best Films of 2017

2017: In Review Quick Review Year In Review

And that’s it.  Another year in the rear view mirror and another reason to take a look back at the BEST, WORST and, well, others of 2017.

So here it is: my pick of the BEST films of 2017.

Film of The Year:  Baby Driver

In Brief: Yup the Spacey factor makes this awkward for sure BUT the fact that it still remains as many favourite film of the year DESPITE of that should tell you just how good Baby Driver is.  Edgar Wright delivers a fanatic, charming, 90’s style film that mixes True Romance, Bullet and many other great films to make what will probably be a modern classic. Oh and THAT soundtrack.  Superb.

2. T2 Trainspotting
In Brief: : Silly title yes. Silly film? No.  Few films are ever made about what it’s like to be middle aged, by T2 Trainspotting nails it. It’s not perfect but it hit where it counted.

3. Paddington 2

In Brief:  Who saw this coming?  Well anyone who actually watched Paddington 2 obviously.  Charming, fun and silly Paddington has more heart than it can share.  It’s just brilliant.

4. Raw
In Brief: This French horror film is a tough watch and will turn some people off for sure.  But I found it captivating, brutal and, er, raw.

5. Star Wars The Last Jedi
In Brief:
It’s a really good Star Wars film and an excellent blockbuster, up there with the year best. Full of massive highs and a few lows, The Last Jedi mostly lives up to expectation.

6. OJ: Made In America – Fascinating documentary

7. Blade Runner 2049 – One of the best SCi-Fi films in many years

8. La La Land – Charming, funny and heart breaking all at once.

9. IT (2017) – One of the best horror films for many a year.

10. Thor: Ragnarok – Marvel go three for three and Thor whilst not the obvious choice was the one, on reflection, I enjoyed most.

Bubbling Under:  Shot Caller, Dunkirk , Spider-Man Homecoming ,Logan ,Prevenge,  Logan Lucky ,  Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 ,Counterpunch,  Jawbone ,  Silence,  Hidden Figures

Paddington 2 – A Quick Capsule Review

Paddington 2 – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Paddington 2 is a wondrous family film.  It’s funny, charming and smart managing to appeal to both kids and adults without resorting to the kind of knowing smutty side jokes that often creep in to appease the adults.  The CGI is great (Paddington is totally believable) but as far as the humans go it’s Hugh Grant who steals the show in his washed up actor role.  One of 2017’s best films for sure.

Best Bit: Hugh Grant is genius.

This time out: Paddington 2

Overall Critics Say

As yet Unreviewed

“State-of-the-art effects combine with playful, generous storytelling in a feelgood sequel only marmalade haters could resist. ” – 4/5

“Paddington 2 should be prescribed as an antidote to anyone who finds the madness of the modern world a bit wearing. It’s probably possible to not absolutely love it, but it’s hard to see how. ” – 5/5

” “Paddington 2” is another near-pawfect family entertainment, honoring the cozy, can-do spirit of Bond’s stories while bringing them smoothly into a bustling, diverse 21st-century London — with space for some light anti-Brexit subtext to boot.”

“Paddington 2 offers up a world in which the character’s mantra of “if you’re kind and polite, everything will come right” is actually true, and that heroes can come in all shapes and sizes. We could all use a little of that. ” -5/5

Close but no cigar: Ready Player One, Rampage, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Purge , Ant Man & The Wasp

5 – The Predator
Shane Black back on the Predator train, this time as a director.  If anyone can realise the potential this franchise has then Black is the man.

4 – Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Movie
Yup it’s had issues (firing the directs 3 weeks from the end of filming) but it’s still a Star Wars films and so far the Disney overloads have yet to deliver a bad film.

3 – Paddington 2
Paddington was a real joy, sweet, funny and charming.  Paddington 2 can be all that and more!

2 – Black Panther
The trailer looks ace and once again Marvel takes another step towards owning the world.

1 – The Avengers: Infinity War
A film ten years in the making, Infinity War will finally mark the arrival of Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet, a million Marvel Characters and The Avengers teaming with The Guardians Of The Galaxy. What is there NOT to be excited about?
