47 Meters Down (2017) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
47 Meters Down is a 2017 survival horror film written and directed by Johannes Roberts, who brings his track record in lower budget independent films to another, mostly enjoyable, lower budget independent film.  It’s nothing new – Open Water, Jaws and a million other films have trodden this path but Roberts does a good job of keeping the tension present during its sub 90 minute run time.  Okay so it runs out of steam a touch by the end and pulls a move that is at best described as ‘well worn’ but there’s enough to enjoy here to recommend as a beer and curry type distraction.

Best Bit: Yup I knew it!

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Shark Movies

Close but no cigar: Jaws 2, Sharknado 2, Megashark Vs Giant Octopus, The Reef, Deep Blue Sea

5 – Open Water
Open Water is a cracking low budget shark movie that’s full of tension and tight direction. Another simple idea with a finned menace at it’s heart

4 – Sharknado
It’s a Shark.  Tornado.  A Sharknado.  Yup it’s cheap, yup it’s silly but man it’s so much fun!

3 – The Meg
Its dumb, OTT and pretty much everything you’d expect from a Jason Statham vs A giant shark movie. Yup.

2 – The Shallows
With one lead, a shark and a very simple premise The Shallows makes you not want to go back in the water all over again.

1 – Jaws
Was there EVER going to be another one? Jaws is a near flawless Shark movie. Even if the plastic Shark Bruce didn’t want to play ball..

The Shallows – A Quick Capsule Review

The Shallows – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Arriving on a sea of hype (pun fully intended), The Shallows mostly lives up it’s billing as a tense, well directed, innovative thriller that once again makes you not want to go back in the water.  Any water.  Even baths. Blake Lively handles herself well in what is effectively a one hander, the effects work well and the direction tense.  It feels a little long at times but overall this is a very effective film and deserves it’s strong word of mouth.
