The Neon Demon – A Quick Capsule Review

The Neon Demon – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Well it’s no Only God Forgives. Thank god. It’s also sadly no Drive, the heights of which Winding Refn looks like he may never reach again. That said The Neon Demon didn’t drive me to switching off the film like Only God Forgives did and, actually whilst it wasn’t mad keen, I’ve seen a lot worse films.  It’s also visually quite stunning.  The issue here is Winding Refn is a pretentious son of a gun and has no worries showing that, never feeling the need to give you resolution or meet expectation.  It’s whether you buy into that style of filmmaking or not and clearly I do not.  So one for fans yes, but for everyone else?  Probably take a pass…

Best Bit: Visually stunning

If You Liked this Try: Drive, Only God Forgives, Bronson

Blog: Grosse Point Geek – July Rapid Fire Review

A Blog Grosse Point Geek Uncategorized

Will quick round up of films he’s seen in July!

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Actors: Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell
In Cinemas now.
Quick Review: Outstanding film, superbly directed by Matt Reeves, featuring brilliant mo cap performances  from Serkisand Kebbell, incredible vfx from WETA and relentlessly exciting action, DOTPTA will deservedly go down as one of the greatest sequels ever made, and is by miles the best film of 2014 so far. Words cannot describe how good this movie is – miss it at your peril.

The Frozen Ground

Actors: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack
Available on dvd to buy and Netflix
Quick Review:So so thriller has Cage’s cop on the trail of serial killer Cusack. Well acted and quite atmospheric in parts but both actors are better than this kind of thing, especially Cusack who, of late, seems to have headed to dvd hell  – yes folks, im talking about THAT John Cusack – you remember him – he was in High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank  -and  if memory serves – they were somewhat superb films – unlike his latest output which has been utter rubbish!

Actors: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard
Available to buy and on Netflix
Quick Review:A very good central performance from Seyfried as former Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace, cant save this from being a somewhat under directed and  rushed affair. Boogie Nights this aint, but not the worst film ever made.

Only God Forgives
Actors: Ryan Gosling, Kristen Scott Thomas
Available to buy and on Netflix
Quick Review: Gosling re teams with Drive  director Nicholas Winding Refn in what can only be described as a load of arty farty crap.  Awful film, hideously boring, with yet another half asleep, virtually wordless performance from the highly over rated Gosling. Yes Ryan, we know you did Drive, and yes it was a good film  – but for Gods sake do something different!

Europa Report
Available on Netflix
Actors: Sharlto Copley,Embeth Davitz
Quick Review: Superb found footage film about a doomed space  mission the moon Europa. Very professionally made on a limited budget, extremely tense and well acted by the entire cast.

Insidious Chapter 2
Actors: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne
Available on Netflix and to buy on dvd.
Quick Review:Not bad sequel to the 2010 surprise smash hit, some scary bits, entertaining in parts, but nothing to write home about.

Texas Killing Fields
Actors: Sam Worthington, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Jessica Chastain.
Available to buy on dvd
Quick Review:Worthington and Morgan are Texas cops pursuing a serial killer. Both actors give standout performances and  its extremely tense in parts – certainly worth watching if you are a fan of True Detective.

The Place Beyond The Pines
Actors: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes.
Available to buy on dvd and to rent from Lovefilm.
Quick Review: Gosling is the bank robber who is trying to provide for his baby son, Cooper is the rookie cop who rises in the ranks due to a selfless act of heroism. Good in parts, and inventively directed, however once again, Gosling annoyingly recycles his Drive character, thankfully though the ever reliable Cooper is simply brilliant and proves once again that he is more than just a pretty face.
