The Rhythm Section (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

The Rhythm Section (2020) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Rhythm Section feels like another one of those cookie cutter mid budget European action films that usually come from Luc Besson and the Europa team.  The fact it’s not then should only tell you that where as the action is usually the saving grace of those films (narrative and plot coming a distance second place), sadly Reed Morano’s film doesn’t even have that to fall back on.  Okay that’s a bit harsh – The Rhythm Section isn’t really an action film but it would have been far better pumping out a few set pieces to cut through the unbelievable and repetitive plot.  Jude Law provides solid support and Lively is a standout but overall this would probably have worked better on the small screen with the story given more time to grow and develop.

Best Bit: Lively is excellent in the main role

Anna (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Anna (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What happened to Luc Besson.  From the heady heights of Nikita and Leon to the brilliant but more controversial Fifth Element he was the darling of early 90’s cinema. But it all went a bit wrong after that.  Joan Of Arc to Lucy and everything in between director Besson was desperately in need of a hit.  Sadly Anna isn’t it.  A messy plot, phoning it in performances and a bloated run time does little to help what is yet another rerun of Nikita. It’s just pretty dull and commands neither your time or your energy when there are FAR better action films this year (see John Wick 3).  Sadly yet another miss for the once great director.

Best Bit: The restaurant fight… maybe

Blog: Lucy – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s fai rato say that Lucy was very much a love it/loathe it kind of film.  I really enjoyed it.  It had the right amount of crazy, mixed with the confidant direction of Besson and a strong leading performance from Scarlett Johansson.  Not all of it works… those expecting an action film or example will be very disappointed and i’m not sure if under any level of scrutiny the story would hold up (yes even a very cursory glance!).  BUT it’s good, unpretentious fun and for that I give it props.  Just know what you’re getting into…

Best Bit: Scarlett Johansson once again giving it her all
