Sharknado Week: Sharknado 5 Global Swarming – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Global Swarming… Yup it’s back and this time it’s travelling across the Globe. It’s as insane as you’d imagine and oddly the rather bad Katie Price cameo isn’t the worst acting in it (Tara Reid who once shone in American Pie is beyond phoning it in these days).  Yup each country has it’s own unique set of cameos as the film goes from one set piece to the next, in one country to the next, with zero logic or story effort.  But who cares when it’s this fun. And it IS fun, probably the fact the most fun since the second Sharkndao film all those years ago.  It wont convert new fans for sure but as a piece of forgettable fun the Sharknado films always deliver.

Best Bit: Sidney Opera house

2 Lava 2 Lantula – A Quick Capsule Review

2 Lava 2 Lantula – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s not winning any Academy Awards but 2 Lava 2 Lantula is fun, silly and hilarious with a surprisingly knowing script that manages to comically reference a host of 80’s and 90’s films and TV shows with style and charm.  Guttenberg is terrible, the cast seem lost half the time and the effects are shoddy.  BUT it’s more fun than the last 3 Transformers movies combined and if you are in that kind of mood few films will hit the spot better.  Enjoy with curry and beer.

Best Bit: Police Academy reunion!

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Look its not going to win any Golden Globes BUT Lavalantula is about as fun as you are going to get from a SyFy movie not called Sharknado.  It’s dumb, funny and never takes itself too seriously whilst also as an added bonus giving us a cast that includes Podcast & Radio stalwart Ralph Garmin and most of the surviving cast of Police Academy.  Like I said this will win few awards but if this is your type of film then there’s enjoyment to be had!

This is the closest we’ll get to a Police Academy reunion, I suppose. Steve Guttenberg stars as a washed-up 90s action hero has-been who’s tasked to rid LA of fire-breathing spiders, as they tear up various roads and buildings. Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey and Leslie Easterbrook are the remaining Academy members who tool up and try to fight back.

It’s basically Sharknado but seemingly on a slightly higher budget. The plot beats and action are all the same. The spider effects are reasonably well done – but as the movie chugs along, the budget clearly depletes when Guttenberg dons his famous action hero outfit – a sort of cross between a Power Ranger and Turbo Man from Jingle All the Way.

I suppose it’s fun to a point. There was certainly an nudge of nostalgia seeing Mahoney, Jones and Hooks fighting back. There are a few nods to other Syfy trash that came before this, with Ian Ziering in a cameo from Sharknado at one point. As with that title, Lavalantula has a desperate feel to it as if Syfy know they need another mega smash-hit on their hands; a sequel is mentioned and, indeed, is in the pipeline. I suspect fire-breathing spiders may have less of a shelf life than sharks embroiled in tornadoes, but only time will tell.
