Daddy’s Home 2 – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
There is a really easy way to watch all the ‘funny’ bits from Daddy’s Home 2.  Watch the trailer. Watching the trailer also means you don’t have to watch the film.  It’s a win win.  In truth it’s not that Daddy’s Home 2 is a bad film, it’s just not that funny. And whilst I’m all for a Mel Gibson come back, his persona here is just a little too close to him real life.  The rets of teh cast do what they can with the limited material but when John Cena arrives it quickly hits a wall. So overall – there are FAR better films to watch that Daddy’s Home 2. Like Daddy’s Home for a start.

Best Bit: Mel Gibson is good.  If a bit close to home

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Finally a Judd Apatow project (at least as a producer) that doesn’t fall into the usual trappings of mumblecore dialogue and over long run times.  Written by and starring Kumail Nanjiani, The Big Sick is actually charming, funny, heart breaking and sweet.  Based on his own real life experiences, the authenticity seeps through the film and gives you a cat of characters you fall in love with.

Best Bit: The end

Bad Moms – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Bad Moms is funny.  Really funny.  Surprisingly funny in fact.  With several laugh out loud moments throughout.  On reflection, Bad Moms it’s one of the funniest films of 2016.  Who knew?  Kunis is charming as usual but actually it’s Oona Laurence who steals the show here as her daughter.  Expert support from Bell, Pinkett-Smith, Applegate and Kathryn Hahn with a great script… yup Bad Moms has rightfully enjoyed considerable success on a very modest budget.  A must watch.

Best Bit: End credit sequence

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
For the second time this month a sequel has impressed me more than an original.  Yup whilst I enjoyed Bad Neighbours i gave it just a 6/10 back in the day.  Not bad.  Yet somehow Bad Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising is actually a better film.  It’s funnier, it’s cleverer, it has more charm and it has a great ongoing dildo joke.  No really.  But as with a lot of comedies it the cast that makes it and  once again proving herself to be a very versatile actress Chloe Grace-Mortez shines here whilst, along with Zac Efron, managing to steal almost every scene she’s in. The jokes work, the film doesn’t outstay it’s welcome and it smashes Kermode’s six laugh test with ease.  Great fun.

Best Bit: Dildo gag.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Trainwreck is funny.  Really funny. Whether you like it or not however will depend on two things.  1 – if you film Schumer and her style funny. 2- if you can cope with Judd Apatatatatataow’s ridiculously patchy style of film making.  Because if the answer to either or both is no, I’d avoid this as for every standout moment there’s a Apatatatatataow signature dip or sequence that could be shorter.  It;s a shame was nearly everyone of his films he’s involved with could be excellent, where as they just end up mostly okay or fine.

Best Bit: Schumer delivers

Phil’s 5 Best Films of 2007…

Quick Review Year In Review

Film of The Year: Bourne Supremacy (9/10)
In Brief:  I had low expectations, liking but not a massive fan of the first 2. I was blown away with its story, action and performances.

2. Transformers
Why It was good: Because against all odds (toy adaptation, Michael Bay directing) this film was simply brilliant, delivering and then some.

3. Rocky Balboa
Why It was good: Stallone returns and brings pathos, heart and soul along with him. A feel good movie like they just don’t make any more.

4. Knocked Up
Why It was good: When a film arrives with so much hype, normally it’s a let down. Not so with Knocked Up, the funniest, warmest and most honest film of the year!

5. Grindhouse
Why It was good: Because it was Tarantino & Rodriguez both on superb form, once again making movies I love to watch!

Bubbling under:
Death Sentence (8/10); Ratatouille (8 /10); Hot Fuzz (7/10); 300 (7/10); 28 Weeks Later (7/10)
