Kajaki – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Kajaki is the best movie from 2014 that you haven’t seen.  Scrub that it’s probably one of the best movies from 2104 period.  Kajaki is as brutal and intimate a war movie as you are ever likely to experience.  And trust me experience is the word… I watched Kajaki and at times forgot to breathe.  The tension is palpable, the acting flawless and the direction outstanding.  This is a must see.

Best Bit: Tension.  In spades.

Only The Dead – A Quick Capsule Review

Only The Dead – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
A war documentary that tries to explore both sides of the story, Only The Dead hits home with some pretty gruesome imagery and a blurred morality that puts you uncomfortably both in front and behind enemy lines. How much you’ll connect the film will depend a lot on how you feel for it’s Australian “lead” whose front and centre throughout, but it’s ultimate anti-war sentiment and shocking images will stay with you long after you leave.

Best Bit: You kinda breathe when it’s over…

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi – A Quick Capsule Review

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Michael Bay in good film shocker!  Yes after far too many years raping our eyeballs and sensibilities with increasingly poor Transformers movies, Bay goes back to what he was actually pretty good at – men with guns – and in the process delivers a good military thriller full of exciting action and taut human drama.  Don’t get me wrong this isn’t going to break any creative landmarks or set a new bar for anything BUT it shows that when given a good script and a tight budget Bay can still deliver the goods.  Up next?  Sadly more Transformers… sigh.

Best Bit: Defending the base

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Restrepo is a powerful and unique look at the front line of the US’s war against terror in Afghanistan.  A brutal and at time heart breaking look at war and conflict, at loss and what we do to get us through the day.  It’s at times hard to watch – soldiers, children, insurgents lying dead at the hands of each other but it’s also a must see.

Best Bit: The personal look

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Powerful, tense and more of of the seat that ANY horror film I’ve seen in a long time, Kajaki is one of the best films I’ve seen in 2015 and certainly one of the best British films I’ve seen in a long time.  Showing what can be done with a good story, great performances and taught direction Kajaki had my pulse racing.  This is simply a must see film, made even more important as a retelling of actual, life changing events that took place at Kajaki Dam in 2006.  Stunning.

Best Bit: So tense.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Fury is brutal, bloody and at times hard to watch.  It’s also flawed, a bit long and, at times, silly.  Thankfully the good outweighs the bad at you are left with a shocking portrayal of a mostly unheralded part of World War 2.

Best Bit: Battle Scenes

Buy, Rent, Stream, Borrow: Rent
