Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Dora and the Lost City of Gold walks a very fine line between entertaining the kids that would have more than a passing knowledge of the TV show and entertaining everyone else (kids and parents alike).  And surprisingly it does it really well, riffing on The Goonies, Indiana Jones and many others along the way.  The cast are obviously having fun and dora herself is endearing.  The fish out of water stuff is funny and the jungle scenes exactly what you would want.   In short: Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a fun action film, an entertaining kids films and a something that more than passes the time.  Well worth a watch.

Best Bit: The sly opening scenes

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Rampage is about as dumb as a summer movie gets.  That said it also delvers bucket loads of fun, Dwayne Johnson in top form and a script that recognises just how silly the film actually is.  Yes it’s far from perfect – the plot is pretty stupid (lets be honest they are trying to make a film out of a ZX Spectrum game), the dialogue lacking at times, the CGI stretched by the films budget and the support characters about as one dimensional as you can get.  Yet I was never bored, the action is clean and watchable and once again Dwayne Johnson sells every second of it.   Just don’t expect TOO much and the film will leave you will be a big smile on your face.

Best Bit: George is dead.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a fun film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, makes the most out of it’s cast’s comic talents whilst delivering a bundle of action set pieces, jokes and a few surprises along the way.   So overall it’s not going to trouble the awards season for sure but if you have kids (or are just a fan the original) there’s loads to enjoy here.  Recommended.

Best Bit: The Rock’s smouldering intensity.

“An enjoyably comedic trip back to the world of Jumanji.”- 7.0

“The action’s passable and Gillan makes a decent fist of an underwritten character. Otherwise, this Jumanji makeover’s a losing game. ” – 2/5

” TBC ” – x/5

” Excitement! Suspense! Childlike innocence! Ingeniously staged action set pieces! These are a few of the things you will not find, anywhere, in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”

“Rarely derivative and always enjoyable, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle is not the uninspired imitation you may have been expecting. ” –4/5
