Frozen 2 (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Frozen was a mess.  No really it was.  A throw it at the wall and see if it works approach that somehow ended up captivating a generation of kids.  But for all its faults, Frozen had bucket loads of charm, memorable songs and female centric story rewrote how a Disney film should be made.  Frozen 2 then had a LARGE mountain to climb.  And pretty predictably for me it fell short.  It’s not bad and I laughed loads but it lacked the ‘lightning in a bottle’ magic that the original delivered in spades… as well as any memorable songs.  Frozen 2 is bigger, bolder and better animated but in the grand scheme of things that doesn’t always make for a better film.  But hey what do I know – a 43 year old is NOT this movies target audience and no doubt kids will love it.

Best Bit: Olaf.  Olaf. Olaf.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It’s been a while since I properly enjoyed a Disney movie, even a Pixar film.  So I was more than pleasantly surprised just how good Frozen was.  Catchy songs, great characters, amazing animation and best of all a heart and soul that even brought a tear to this old grump!  Oh and it managed to entertain my 3 year old daughter from start to finish and not a lot of films can say THAT.

Best Bit: Olaf’s song!

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Rise Of The Guardians is a really good film.  It’s full of adventure, humour and epic set pieces with a strong central morality that makes it stand out from the many similar films that are out there.  Also my 7 year old loved it which is usually a good sign that a film has hit the mark.  The characters are well drawn (both in a character sense and a artistic sense) and the film leaves you with a warm feeling by the end.  Great for kids and adults alike.

Best Bit: The elves are brilliant

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Moana is one of 2016’s best films.  And in a year that produced several pitch perfect animated films that’s saying something.  Charming, great songs and beautifully made, it has a wonderful story at it’s heart along side some winning performances  (Not least then Rock who even gets his own song).  Disney are on top form at the moment and it’s no surprise that this has been one of their best years.  A must watch for adults and children.

Best Bit: The Rock sings!

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Gift isn’t you average psychological thriller that much is for sure.  Writer, Director and co-Star Joel Edgerton delivers an assured debut that puts much more experienced directors in the shadows.  Just as you expect the film to go one way, the film delivers yet another surprise.  Stunning performances and a great ending make this one of the stand out thrillers of the year.

Best Bit: The gift

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
I like musicals.  I like Anna Kendrick.  I even love Stardust which this film shares a few stylistic choices with.  So together this should be a winni… oh wait.  It’s got Meryl Streep? Oh.  AND Johnny Depp playing a strange peadofilic singing wolf?  Er… and James Cordon as the lead man?  And just like that it fell apart.   Which is a shame because the idea behind Into The Woods is great, it’s just a shame that the execution is so hamfisted and obviously.    One to miss.

Best Bit: Anna Kendrick is adorable.  As always.
