Pan (2015) – A Revisited Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
It don’t want to see like I’m being overly harsh here but Pan possibly rates as one of the films I’ve least connected with in my long history of watching movies.  And I sat through The Thin Red Line.  Pan is admitably visually stunning but it lacks any cohesion, leaving you feeling oddly hollow. Ye this is as corporate films get.  The Birds Eye Fish fingers of movies.  What’s sad is there is a great idea in here, it’s just so clumsily  put together with dull, flat and noteless performances alongside a script devoid of any wit or charm.  Sadly then this film is worthy of the panning (get it!) the critics gave it.  One to leave.

Best Bit: NOT singing Nirvana thats for sure.  Probably the visuals.

Sorry to Bother You (2018)- A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Okay so to explain Sorry to Bother You would be pretty hard without some pretty big spoilers. That said if you think along the lines of Get Out then you are not a million miles off.  And much like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You arrives with great hype.  Also like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You probably doesn’t quite warrant it.  A pitch black social commentary without any subtly, it’s a good ride but ultimately it asks more than it answers.

Best Bit: The toilet

The Shape Of Water (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

The Shape Of Water (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Shape Of Water is a pretty good genre movie.  It’s not a four times Academy award winner.  And it’s certainly not a best picture or best director winner.  What you have here is a case of emperors new clothes. Yes it’s interesting, has some great performances with solid direction and for a two hour film doesn’t feel long but there is little special about what’s on offer here and a lot of it (not least the make up) I’ve seen before.  Del Toro for me has always been overrated and The Shape Of Water further cements that for me.  Bad? Nowhere near. But Best film of 2017/8? Sorry… no.

Best Bit: The Escape

The House With A Clock in Its Walls – A Quick Capsule Review

The House With A Clock in Its Walls – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The House With A Clock in Its Walls is a fun, silly and sometimes dark kids film that (whilst originally written before) follows the Harry Potter template to a tee.  And whilst it doesn’t land every beat (the odd CGI baby will certainly weird you out but for all the wrong reasons) it’s fantastical ideas and always forward momentum help you forgot those (few) moments.  Black is good but he does seem to be sleep walking these days but Blanchett shines here an a brilliantly off beat and quirky role. Kids will love it.

Best Bit: Entering the house
