Sunshine On Leith (2013) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Well that was  a surprise… a musical based on the works of The Proclaimers (whose music I detest as a general rule) not only managed to be charming and funny but also made me actually want to buy their music.  More over Sunshine On Leith, full of great choreography, charing performances and a heart missing from modern day filming,  ended up as probably one of the top ten films of 2013.  Who saw that coming?  Highly recommended.

Best Bit: 500 Miles.

West Of Memphis (2012) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review
West Of Memphis is one of the most engaging, tense and fascinating films i have seen in 2012.  Not documentary.  Film.  An unbelievable story, about an unbelievable set of events, Memphis tacks this familiar case from origins up to date, leaving you in no uncertain terms where the filmmakers and their many supporters lay their suspicions.  Emotionally charged and simply brilliant.

Best Bit: That was nearly 3 hours?  Flies past.

Beast Of The Southern Wild (2012) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review
Beast Of The Southern Wild is truly one of the best debut films I have ever seen.  Stunning, poetic & beautiful this almost impossible to describe coming of age fantasy drama shows a true talent in the making both behind the camera and in front (Quvenzhane Wallis is truly amazing).  This is a film that deserves to be seen… if not always understood.

Best Bit: Quvenzhane Wallis

Universal Soldier Day Of Reckoning – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review
Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Wow. Who would have thought it… this Universal Soldier sequel turns out to be not only the best film in the franchise but probably one of the top 10 films of the year.   No really.  Action packed, making the most of it’s probable modest budget, it finally gives star Adkins a role to get his teeth into whilst trading punches with two other members of the Expendables 2 cast.  Watch this if you like you action 90’s style.
Best Bit: One shot shoot out

You’ve Been Trumped – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
You’ve Been Trumped doesn’t paint a nice picture of the billionaire and the director of this film will certainly be missing from Donald Trump’s Christmas card list this year once he’s watched this.  Because as one sided as the story told here is, whatever way you look at it Donald Trump comes off as a bit of a twat.  To be nice.  Otherwise it’s business as usual, the big bad company headed by the powerful uber rich American vs the small British town & towns folk.  Interesting but unbalanced.

Skyfall – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Hold the phone.  007 is back and this time he’s bloody near perfect.  Yes that’s right Skyfall is exactly as good as the hype suggest, a film that returns Bond to the classic figure we know and love whilst throwing in enough action, heartache and shootouts to be a damn good action thriller in it’s own right.  From the Aston Martin, to the fight in a lizard pit (yes really!), this is Bond at the best he’s been for a long time. Highly re-watchable, massively fun.  A must watch. Just a shame about the song.

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Not often do you get a film that so brilliant ‘does what it says on the tin’ but welcome then to Big Ass Spider a film about… well I think you can guess.  So cheesy dialogue, poor FX, Lloyd Kaufman cameo, mostly TV cast… it’s all here.  But you know what? It’s bloody good fun despite all that. Or maybe because of? Regardless this is a fun way to spend 90 mins.  It’s won’t linger much past the end credits but that’s not always a bad thing.

Best Bit: The opening. Actually quite brilliant.

Sharknado. Yes. Shark-bloody-nado. Hell I have ZERO idea what I can say about this film other than if you think the title sounds silly then this is a film you will hate with an extreme passion.  If like me the title sounds all manor of awesome, then there’s a lot to love in this knowingly cheesy, cheap as chips, barking mad Sharks in a tornado movie. For everyone else, I’d probably recommend avoiding this. Genius.  Mad genius.

The Bay – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Bay is a real surprise.  Firstly it’s a big name director (Oscar winner Barry Levinson) doing something VERY different and secondly, probably even more relevant, it’s an original and engrossing found footage movie.  Shocks, scares and thrills aplenty here but also a good story that replies on more than jump shocks (that said it ha s a few classics) and cheap tricks.  Highly recommended.

Best Bit: The direction and concept
