The Secret Life Of Pets 2 (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Secret Life Of Pets was a great concept in need of a better film.  Thankfully The Secret Life Of Pets 2, whilst far from perfect, at least does a far more even job of delivering the film we all wanted first time out. Okay so it’s still VERY Toy Story in its execution but even a lesser version of Toy Story can still make for a fun,  sometimes funny, often witty film.  It’s hardly essential viewing but, if like me, you need a way to distract a kid across a Sunday afternoon you can do far worse.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Secret Life of Pets is basically Toy Story without Pixar.   That’s not a bad thing of course but it does feel like somewhat of a retread of the much better Pixar classic.  It’s charming, funny and (occasionally) smart.  It’s also not as funny as it should have been, not as clever as you want it to be and not as charming as it thinks it is… which is a shame as the film has bucket loads of potential. Ultimately the kids will love it, adults with find it witty and it will make money.  Hopefully of the sequel they can develop the bits that worked best into a what could be a comedy gem.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Let’s get this out the way first – The Minion’s are the best thing about Despicable Me 3 which is odd as , in a movie of their own, the joke wore thin pretty quick. But here used sparingly they work much better.  What doesn’t work, sadly, is almost everything else.  The Dru/Gru dynamic gets old quick and we’ve seen a lot of this before in the previous movies.  But as the film went on I just found myself waiting for the next Minion sequence for laughs.  This all said my seven year old loved it so what do I know right!

Best Bit: The Minions.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Damn.  Well I guess that prove you should be careful what you wish for… the film everyone wanted ends up being the film doesn’t seem to quite connect with anyone.  It’s too scary for young kids, not funny or smart enough for adults, Minions takes the loveable creatures from Despicable Me and shows that over the course of an feature length film it’s just a little too much.  Okay so maybe with a better script this could have worked, but this film certainly doesn’t sadly, as much as I wanted to love it.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What a lovely surprise.  Shaun The Sheep is a joy – a laugh out loud, charming, heart warming smash from Ardman…  the studio that can do no wrong.  A film that ill appeal to kids and adults alike, there’s no reason NOT to watch this.  Top 5 of 2015 so far…

Phil’s 5 Best Films of 2013

Phil’s 5 Best Films of 2013

Quick Review Year In Review

So here it is… my pick of the BEST films of 2013.

Film of The Year: Rush
In Brief:I loved Rush.  An excellent drama, a brilliant F1 film and best of all, a movie that keeps it sense of fun and humour.

2. Zero Dark Thirty
In Brief:  One of the first films I saw in 2013 ends up being one of the best.  Thrilling edge of seat drama, with tense direction from Katherine Bigelow and  top notch performances.  Brilliant.

3. McCullin
In Brief: A fascinating documentary on a fascinating man.  It’s not flashy or showy but it tells the story of a true original.

4. The Way Way Back
In Brief: A lovely coming of age film, charming sweet and funny with some great central performances.

5. Despicable Me 2
In Brief: Not just one of the funniest film of 2013 but also one of the most charming.  Okay so it’s mostly down to the excellent Minions but Despicable Me 2 had me quoting lines even to this day.

Bubbling under:
Thor 2, Hitchcock; Alan Partridge Alpha Papa; Mea Maxima Culpa; Iron Man 3; White House Down; Django Unchained; Batman The Dark Knight Returns Pt 2; The Impossible; Olympus Has Fallen; Fast 6; Kick Ass 2, Blackfish

Phil’s 5 Worst Films of 2013

Quick Review Year In Review

So here it is… my pick of the WORST films of 2013.  And man what a bunch there were to pick from this year, probably one of the worst years in film of recent memory.

Worst Film of The Year: The Host
In Brief: Oh god.  So incompetent.  So boring. So devoid of any skill or a talent.  Yup The Host is by far the worst film of 2013 and THAT’s saying something.  Inept on every level. Yes if you hated Twilight then this is one to avoid.

2. The Worlds End
In Brief:  I loved Shaun of The Dead. I adored Hot Fuzz. Okay so I didn’t like Paul or Scott Pilgrim so maybe the bubble had already burst but for two hours I sat stoney faced, not laughing more than once. Horrid.

3. A Good Day To Die Hard
In Brief: This was neither good day or a Die Hard movie.  Watch RoboMcClane as he jumps from helicopters, baths in Nuclear water, gets shot at, jumps from buildings and rapes your memory of what a good Die Hard film looked like.

4. R.I.P.D
In Brief: You heard it was bad.  And it was.  Really bad.  Like Men In Black without the good bits.  Or Will Smith. Or even the piss poor sequels.

5. Stoker
In Brief: Yes okay so maybe I just didn’t get it but I was thoroughly bored and unmoved as Poker Face Kidman fails to emote for almost two hours whilst something happens and then… fuck it who cares.

Bubbling under: A Field In England; ABC’s Of Death; I Spit On Your Grave 2; This Is The End ; After Earth; Only God Forgives; Oz The Great & Powerful; Killing Them Softly; Broken City; Gangster Squad; Pain & Gain; Now You See Me; Elysium; Pacific Rim; The Family

Overrated Film of 2013… So Far:
 Gravity (6/10)
Yes that’s right, critic fav Gravity did little for me.  It was nice to look at but man was the story dull and the performances average.  By the end?  I just didn’t care.
