The Happytime Murders (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

The Happytime Murders (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Happytime Murders got a pretty hard deal when it was released earlier this year, with critics rounding to brand it a failure.  You can see WHY… the film doesn’t quite deliver on its premise and it often fails to go too far (something I think is required by this genre) stopping at ‘just far enough’ sometimes.  But all these things considered I still enjoyed the hell out of this crude, rude, puppet buddy cop comedy that had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion.   Oh and one tip – stick around for the outtakes… well worth the extra five minutes!

Best Bit: Puppet orgasm

The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Spy Who Dumped Me is pretty bad.  It’s overlong, unfunny and grating.  The jokes land flat, the action is pretty meh and overall it did very little to entertain me for it’s two hour run time.  for me it probably sits in the bottom 10 films of 2018 and certainly not one I’d suggest was worth a revisit.

Best Bit: The escape/Gymnast fight is pretty fun

Sunshine On Leith (2013) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Sunshine On Leith (2013) – A Quick Capsule Review (Revisited)

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Well that was  a surprise… a musical based on the works of The Proclaimers (whose music I detest as a general rule) not only managed to be charming and funny but also made me actually want to buy their music.  More over Sunshine On Leith, full of great choreography, charing performances and a heart missing from modern day filming,  ended up as probably one of the top ten films of 2013.  Who saw that coming?  Highly recommended.

Best Bit: 500 Miles.

TAG (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

TAG (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Based on a real story, TAG is a pretty fun knock around comedy that has a winning turn from Jeremy Renner and serves as an impressive calling card for its debutant director Jeff Tomsic.  Okay so it’s totally forgettable and won’t stick with you for longer than you are in the cinema but not every film has to be Goodfellas right?  So TAG will pass an evening with a curry and a few beers when you can’t be bothered to do anything else…

Best Bit: Renner enters the game

The House With A Clock in Its Walls – A Quick Capsule Review

The House With A Clock in Its Walls – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The House With A Clock in Its Walls is a fun, silly and sometimes dark kids film that (whilst originally written before) follows the Harry Potter template to a tee.  And whilst it doesn’t land every beat (the odd CGI baby will certainly weird you out but for all the wrong reasons) it’s fantastical ideas and always forward momentum help you forgot those (few) moments.  Black is good but he does seem to be sleep walking these days but Blanchett shines here an a brilliantly off beat and quirky role. Kids will love it.

Best Bit: Entering the house

Brewster’s Millions (1985) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Brewster’s Millions will sit on few people’s lists of best films of the 80’s.  But actually over 30 years on, it holds up well and the message is probably even more relevant today than ever.  To be honest it’s just great to see Richard Pryor back when almost everything he touches turned to gold.  Add to that a cast that includes the late, great John Candy and you have a real gem of mid-80’s cinema.  It’s silly, brash and on the nose for sure but it’s full of charm, wit and heart as well.

Best Bit: None Of The Above!

Joe Rogan Strange Times (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Joe Rogan is a comedian that likes to push the boundaries.   A UFC/MMA commentator and world famous podcaster, it’s comedy that always drives Rogan and you can tell.  His latest Netflix special Strange Times is biting, funny and crude as he takes on culture, pro wrestling, pot laws, cats and vegans – all to hilarious effect.  Rogan considers this to be his best special yet and he may be right – the material is polished, the deliver on point and the emotion strong.  It may not be to everyone’s tastes (he has been pulled up on certain opinions previously that doesn’t always sit well with the more gentile millennial) but this is one of the worlds best stand-ups on top form, whether you agree with what he says or not.

Best Bit: Vegans

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Stream (Netflix)
