Lady Bird – A Quick Capsule Review

Lady Bird – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Lady Bird is a surprise.  Arriving on the back of a near perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and a bundle of great reviews, it’s fair to say this usually isn’t my kinda of film.  What a surprise then that Lady Bird is a total joy to watch – an authentic, honest and at times heart breaking coming of age story which leaves behind the schmaltz and instead delivers likeable, real characters doing the things real teenagers do.  Is it a near 100% worthy film… maybe not but it’s a bloody good one regardless.

Best Bit: Saoirse Ronan is superb

Best & Worst Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What a film.  Mark my words if not the film of the year Whiplash will certainly be up there on a very short list.  From top notch performances, some of the best use of editing and music I’ve seen in a long time and with a story and characters you buy into 100%, cinema doesn’t get any more enthralling than this.  Can’t recommend this enough.

Best Bit: JK Simmons

Moonlight – A Quick Capsule Review

Moonlight – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Moonlight is an interesting failure. Actually failure is a bit harsh. The film doesn’t fail – the direction is great and the central performances are top draw but overall it feels a little TV movie of the week.  Be it the bullying (which feels like Home & Away at times) or the boys self discovery, there’s nothing here that feels groundbreaking or fresh. That said the performances alone make this worth watching and whilst it falls short of the critical praise heaped on it, it’s worthy enough to spend a couple of hours film

Best Bit: The Performances
