The Hate U Give (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The Hate U Give tells a fascinating story of a police shooting and its effects on the wider community, with strong performances at its core and a message that sticks with you after the credits roll.  It’s a shame then that the film feels so sluggish at time.  At over two hours, this is obvious Oscar bate and would have benefited from a shorter runtime with a few less obvious narrative choices.  Not a film you can enjoy for sure but certainly one with a strong message to tell that can be admired from a far.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Okay so to explain Sorry to Bother You would be pretty hard without some pretty big spoilers. That said if you think along the lines of Get Out then you are not a million miles off.  And much like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You arrives with great hype.  Also like Get Out, Sorry to Bother You probably doesn’t quite warrant it.  A pitch black social commentary without any subtly, it’s a good ride but ultimately it asks more than it answers.

Best Bit: The toilet

Blindspotting (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Blindspotting (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
What a pleasant surprise Blindspotting turned out to be.  At times a knock around comedy, it’s a film that manages to be both funny and thoughtful whilst delivering social commentary without every feeling like it’s laying it on.  It just shows that indie films still have the ability to surprise, something that has happened less and less since their heyday in the 90’s.   Yes it’s violent, yes it’s full of words you wouldn’t say in front of your grandmother but it feels real and that authenticity goes a long way.
