Phil’s Top 5… Underrated Film Directors

Phil’s Top 5… Underrated Film Directors

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: My top 5 Underrated Directors!

Close but no cigar: Isaac Florentine, Richard Donner, Neveldine/Taylor

5 – Don Siegel
Without Siegel modern cinema would look very different.  From the reboot of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers to an Elvis musical through to a John Wayne western and of course Dirty Harry.

4 -George Miller
Mad Max director Miller doesn’t get much love for his non Mad Max films, but he’s a talented director who has could flip from hardcore action to kids fantasy with ease.

3 – Martin Campbell
The man who twice reinvented the Bond franchise with Casino Royale & Goldeneye, Campbell is adept at high qulaity action on a relatively modest budget.

2 – Joel Schumacher
Yes he made Batman & Robin but aside from his Batman franchise killing, he’s also made some excellent films.   From The Lost Boys to Phone Booth and A Time To Kill, Schumacher when focused can deliver top notch thriller.

1 – Tony Scott
From Top Gun to True Romance, from Enemy of The State to Unstoppable Scott was and remains one of my favourite directors.  Sadly no longer with us, Scott delivered top quality blockbusters like no other.

Phil’s Top 5… Bad Superhero Films

Phil’s Top 5… Bad Superhero Films

Other Cr*p Top 5

Every Friday, Phil from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review takes a lookout a different movie related Top Five… this time out: BAD SUPERHERO FILMS.

Close but no cigar: X-Men 3, Electra, Spiderman 3, Batman Forever, Steel

5 – Batman & Robin
The fact that the incompetent Batman & Robin only makes No5 on this list is a testament to how bad some of the other films are.  That’s not to say Batman & Robin isn’t bad.  It is.  Awash with neon, shockingly scripted (Since when was Oxbridge a university???), badly acted and yes they even put nipples on the bat suit.  Terrible.

4 – Superman 4: The Quest For Peace
Yes this is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, but this cheaply produced Cannon debacle pretty much does everything wrong that you could do.  Repeat shots, reused footage, terrible plot, Repeat shots, a bored cast, Repeat shots… the list goes on.  Worth watching only for humour sakes.

3 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The OTHER Deadpool movie.  You know where the Merc with a Mouth has his mouth sewn shut and the film pretty much tries to rewrite everything we know about the character WHILST ignore it’s own movie continuity.

2 – Ghost Rider: Sprit Of Vengeance
Ghost Rider was bad.  Ghost Rider 2 was off the chart terrible.  Nic Cage proves once and for all that he is the most overrated actor in Hollywood and Marvel show the reason why they should never sell off their screen rights again.

1 – Catwoman
The issue with a lot of these films is that they either ignore the long established character history from the source material or just don’t understand their central subject.  Never is that more obvious than with Catwoman.  It literately has nothing to do with the Batman villain.  Add to the fact it’s terribly acted, Sharon Stone & Halle Berry give career worst performances (and THAT is saying something from those two) and at one point you actually see a man doubling for Catwoman in an action scene.  Yes really.

One Sentence Reviews… Round 1

Uncategorized
Looking through my DVD collection there’s a raft of films that due to age, obscurity or general lack of point in doing so will never be reviewed here. So with that in mind let me introduce a semi-regular new feature.
The one sentence review. The MTV/McDonalds hamburger of reviews…

Watch two guys play whose penis is bigger in a homoerotic take of male bonding.

BATMAN & ROBIN
Oh my god Clooney Killed Batman. You bastard.

BRAVEHEART
Enjoyable but as factually accurate as a Kosivan immigrant, who barely has idea where the UK is, explaining the history of our royal family to an alien in Spanish.

CANNONBALL RUN 2
Like Cannonball Run. Just with added Sinatara.

CON AIR
The usual Bruckheimer… but without the action.

DELIVERANCE

A film made for women who have either been dumped or run out of batteries for their rampant rabbit.

THE DOORS
