Batman: Hush (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Batman: Hush continues DC’s impressive run of animated adaptations of their classic comic book back catalogue.  This time is the seminal Hush storyline which gives us a veritable rogues gallery of Batman villains – from The Riddler, Joker, Scarecrow, Bane and many  more…  and once again you are left wondering why DC live action just doesn’t follow this massively successful template rather than the dross it’s produced.  So no surprises for fans of the original story but for everyone else this is super solid.

Batman Ninja (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Batman Ninja (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Well Batman Ninja takes the rule book and throws it right out the door.  Take Batman and his considerable rogues gallery and plant them back into Feudal Japan, throw in a sprinkling of traditional Anime trappings, some Mechas and a whole bundle of crazy and you get what is one of the most fun Batman films ever made.  And that’s the thing – Batman films often lack the fun of Marvel movies but Batman Ninja delivers bright colours, impressive visuals and some insane ideas from start to end.  In short Batman Ninja is a must for fans.

Phil’s Top 5… Comic Book Movie Villains

Phil’s Top 5… Comic Book Movie Villains

Other Cr*p Top 5

Each week Phil, from Phil’s Quick Capsule Review, takes a look at a different movie or TV related Top Five.  This time out: Comic Book Movie Villains

Close but no cigar: The Joker (Batman), Loki (Thor),Magneto (X-Men), The Joker (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm), The Vulture (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Lex Luthor (Superman)

5 – General Zod (Superman 2)
Zod had menace, power and proved to be more than a match for Reeves Superman.

4 – Erik Killmonger (Black Panther)
Tough as nails, driven and deadly Killmonger is yet another layered villain in the Marvel cinematic universe.

3 – Thanos (Avengers: Infinity War)
Thanos is a layered villain with menace.  But combined with a believable agenda and a measured performance by Brolin, Thanos is by far one of Marvel’s best.

2 – Catwoman (Batman Returns)
Sexy, mysterious, deadly and seductive Michelle Pfeiffer steals the show from both DeVito’s The Penguin and Keaton’s Batman.

1 – The Joker (The Dark Knight)
Simply the best. Menacing, cerebral, unpredictable – Heath Ledger’s Joker is without a doubt teh best Superhero Comic Book Movie Villain ever.

Batman And Harley Quinn – A Quick Capsule Review

Batman And Harley Quinn – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Much like last years The Killing Joke Adaptation, Batman & Harley Quinn is a 40 minutes at best TV episode padded out to (just) feature length by some baffling sequences (think passing wind in the car or Harley singing) and script choices.  It’s very crude at times and feels pretty childish.  Yes it shouldn’t be all doom and gloom (we a have BVS and the live action DC universe for that  ) but tonally it has no idea what it wants to be. Also I wasn’t that enamoured with the story.  Animated Batman is always fun but we are light years away from Mask Of The Phantasm here…

Best Bit: Always fun to see Harley On Screen

Other Cr*p Top 5

In a new semi-regular feature each week Phil takes a lookout a different movie related Top Five… this time out: Batman movies!

Close but no cigar: Batman, Batman Vs Superman Dawn Of Justice, The Dark Knight Rises

5 – Batman: The Movie
Camp? Yes.  Hysterical? Hell yes. Adam West delivers the most fun Batman ever with a host of villains and some nutty moments from running with the bomb to Bat Shark repellent.  It’s genius.

4 – Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan set out a new generation of Batman films with his darkly grounded noir take on Batman’s origin.  It’s totally different from everything that came before and delivered a Batman we hadn’t yet seen on screen.

3 – Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
The best animated Batman film, Mask of The Phantasm sees Batman as detective in a spin off from the insanely great Batman Animated TV show.

2 – Batman Returns
Imagine the pitch… Burger King sit down to look at Batman Returns in all it’s glory to plan their multi-million dollar tie ins and instead of a sequel to the original Batman they get a darkly gothic german expressionism masterpiece that is about the most unsettling film to sit a kid down infant of ever.

1 – The Dark Knight
Yup.  My favourite film of the 00’s and one of THE best superhero films ever, The Dark Knight has compelling action, the best onscreen Joker and a driving narrative that keep the pace up despite the run time.  Oh and it looks amazing.

Batman The Killing Joke – A Quick Capsule Review

Batman The Killing Joke – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Batman The Killing Joke doesn’t live up to the heights of previous DC animated films mostly due to the padding of having to convert a shortish graphic novel to a feature length film. That said when the somewhat misconceived Batwoman story is done and the Killing Joke clicks in, it delivers pretty much everything you’d want of an adaption of the seminal text with the additional benefit of some top notch voice casting once again.  This is dark stuff and hopefully sets the tone for future adaptations to be more mature.  Zack Snider take note.  THIS is how you do gritty.
