Ross & Phil Talk Movies Present: The 2020 Boyask Awards for Action In Movies

Ross & Phil Talk Movies Present: The 2020 Boyask Awards for Action In Movies

A Blog

‘The Boyasks’ (named for our very own Action obsessed Ross Boyask) pick up on what the Academy, BAFTA’s and Globes miss out… acknowledging the performance, craft and skill of action & stunt performers and cinema. Last year Mission Impossible: Fallout swept the board in at the 1st Annual Boyask Action Awards, with Tom Cruise & Loren Janes entering the Hall of Fame.

This year Ross breaks the rules, doesn’t nominate in a category and try to nominate Dolomite for almost everything. We also, on reflection, decide that 2019 wasn’t a GREAT year for action films.

Phil’s 5 Worst Films of 2019

Phil’s 5 Worst Films of 2019

2019: In Review Quick Review Year In Review

So 2019 is almost over and it’s that time a year again where everyone reflects back on their best and worst films of the year.  So first up… the 10 WORST films of 2019 (with a few honourable mentions!).  And, as always, there were more than a few to choose from..

Stinker of LAST Year: Holmes & Watson

In Brief: The film so bad I actually forgot i watched it.  Nothing funny here just a total miss of a movie. Worst thing – It actually came out in 2018 and this whole year I had this down as my 2019 Worst film of the year. I now hate it even more.

Stinker of the Year (2019): The Dead Don’t Die

In Brief: Pretentious? Yup. Boring. Yup. Pointless? Even more so. The Dead Don’t Die is just a total slog.

2. Lucky Day

In Brief: Roger Avery is back.  And it’s pretty clear he has no idea how to make a film anymore.  Sub Tarantino garbage.

3. Alita: Battle Angel

In Brief: So many years.  So much money. So little point.

4. Hellboy (2019)

In Brief: It’s total garbage.  A boring, mess of a film that offers nothing new and even less interesting.

5. The Fanatic – It’s just really, really, really stupid.

6. Godzilla: King of The Monsters – Lots of money + lots of monsters + zero plot still equals a shit film

7. 3 From Hell –
Rob Zombie shits on his few decent movies with this tedium.

8. Close –
Another year another failed Netflix movie.

9. Anna –
A dull Luc Besson action film that the world could have happily have done without

10. X-Men: Dark Phoenix  – Big budget, big ideas, stupid film and worst… it’s totally forgettable. The 2nd worst X-Men movie (yes this is still not as bad as X-Men 3)

Dis-Honourable Mentions: Velvet Buzzsaw , Into The Ashes, Killer Sofa, Child’s Play (2019), Crawl, Pet Sematary (2019), Gemini Man, Triple Threat, The Banana Splits Movie, Trial By Fire, Stuber, Rabid (2019), Angel Has Fallen

The 2019 Films I just couldn’t Finish: Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers, Mary Queen Of Scotts

Angel Has Fallen (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Angel Has Fallen (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Quick Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Angel Has Fallen is probably my favourite on this trilogy of action movies.  But that’s not saying much – I hated London has Fallen and White House Down trumped Olympus Has Fallen in almost every way. In truth Angel Has Fallen is good enough to entertain/pass the time but its lacklustre action choreography, weak CGI and bored Gerard Butler do little to push it over the edge.  So… fans of the ‘franchise’ will probably like it, but in a year where Hobbs & Shaw blew up half the world, Angel Has Fallen doesn’t offer a great deal new or better…

Best Bit: The assault on the president

Buy, Stream, Avoid: Stream

If You Liked this Try: Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down, London Has Fallen

Angel Has Fallen (2019): Review by Grosse Point geek

Angel Has Fallen (2019): Review by Grosse Point geek

A Blog Other Cr*p

Plot In A Nutshell: When the President of The United States (Morgan Freeman) is attacked and his security detail wiped out, legendary secret service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler)  finds himself framed and forced to go on the run to clear his name and find out who the real villains are.

What worked: Butler is solid as ever, Freeman is wonderful as POTUS and the great Nick Nolte steals every scene he’s in as Banning’s estranged war vet father.

Most importantly the action is really great  – lots of explosions, gun fights, fisticuffs, death, destruction and a cracking last 20 minutes when all hell breaks loose in a bullet riddled fight to the death between Banning and the baddies.

What could have been better: To say the least its somewhat predictable  – you can guess who the villains are from a mile off, the dialogue is at times a bit ‘Basil Exposition’ and on the whole it isnt as good as the last two films in the ‘Has Fallen’ franchise.

Review Summary: Lacks the kinetic lunacy and heart in the mouth cheer for the good guys spirit of Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen but Butler, Freeman and particularly Nolte are fantastic, the action delivers in spades and the whole thing is hugely enjoyable from beginning to end. Ok it isnt exactly Oscar friendly but who cares when a film is this much fun?

See it at the cinema? Yes

Buy It On DVD/Blu Ray ? Yes

Grosse Point Geek’s 2018 In Review

Grosse Point Geek’s 2018 In Review

A Blog Year In Review

Each year Will and Phil compare notes on their favourite and least favourite films of 2018… here’s Will’s look at what’s been and what he’s most looking forward to in 2019.

Top Ten Best:

  1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (just superb – loved it)
  2. First Man (brilliantly directed and the moon landing sequence was brilliant)
  3. The Darkest Hour (had me in tears)
  4. Mission Impossible Fallout (a genuine summer blockbuster, featuring a proper movie star doing his own stunts and the kind of balls to the wall action scenes we have haven’t seen in years)
  5. BlackKKKLansman (funny and brilliant – I usually don’t like Spike Lee but this was incredibly good)
  6. Bohemian Rhapsody (Rami Malik’s performance was incredible and the Live Aid concert re-enactment at the end was gobsmacking)
  7. Avengers Infinity War – (exciting, fast paced, funny, great action, a cracking villain and THAT ending – roll on Avengers Endgame)
  8. A Star Is Born (a trio of incredible performances  – Lady Gaga was a revelation, Coopers acting and direction were brilliant plus Sam Elliott was astounding)
  9. Creed 2 (not as good as Creed or Rocky Balboa – but still great and had lots of heart)
  10. 12 Strong – balls to the wall action, great story, v well-acted

Top Ten Honouree mentions

  1. Deadpool 2 (v funny and extremely clever in parts)
  2. A Quiet Place –  (tense and scary  – a great directorial debut from John Krasinski)
  3. Hunter Killer (ridiculous but really great fun with a smashing performance from Gerard Butler)
  4. Ant Man and The Wasp (not Marvels best but I really liked it)
  5. The Meg (complete nonsense but a good laugh)
  6. Rampage (utterly insane but top drawer entertainment)
  7. Skyscraper (a Die Hard clone but who cares when its this much fun?)
  8. Mile 22 (I must be the only person on the planet who liked this one!)
  9. Mamma Mia 2 (a genuinely lovely film that had heart and soul and wanted nothing more than to entertain and have people leave the cinema with a big smile on their faces)
  10. Outlaw King (well made, top final battle and a great turn from Chris Pine)

Top Ten Worst

  1. Death Wish (terrible terrible terrible.  Bruce  – you obviously can’t be bothered anymore so either start putting in the effort or do us all a favour and give it up)
  2. Red Sparrow (what should have a been a balls to the wall action caper turned out to be nothing more than catastrophically over long and boring as all hell)
  3. Pacific Rim Uprising (not as bad as the first one but still rubbish)
  4. Equalizer 2 (utter pants, dull and completely pretentious to boot)
  5. Love Simon (I liked the message it was trying to give but hated the way it did it)
  6. Ladybird (yes I know it was loved by the critics but I HATED this film with a vengeance!)
  7. Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald (so boring I nearly fell asleep- this franchise needs a new director – fast)
  8. Ghost Stories (complete bilge and made no sense)
  9. 15:17 To Paris (now this was awful – Clint we love you but dear God mate what were you thinking?????)
  10. Mortal Engines (not the worst film I’ve ever seen and certainly gets an ‘A’ for effort but this just didn’t work at all)

Biggest Letdown:

The Predator  – someone PLEASE tell Shane Black that he isn’t as good as he obviously thinks he is  -also somebody please explain to me how in the hell they managed to blow this one????

2019 Most anticipated:

  1. Avengers: Endgame
  2. Star Wars Episode IX
  3. Rambo: The Last Blood (yeah I said it!)
  4. Angel Has Fallen (yeah Hobden you read it right -I said that too!)
  5. Captain Marvel
  6. Glass
  7. Godzilla King Of The Monsters
  8. Hellboy
  9. Spiderman: Far From Home
  10. Captive State
  11. Brightburn
  12. Hobbs and Shaw
  13. The New Mutants
  14. X-Men Dark Phoenix
  15. Fighting With My Family

See you next year!
