Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind (2018) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The passing of Robin Williams hit me hard.  Obviously I didn’t know him personally but his films and his comedy were cornerstones across my life.  His genius is very much missed.  This documentary takes words from the man himself along new interviews of friends, Comedians and family along with a healthy dose of film from his career and, most interestingly, rarely seen behind the scenes footage.  It’s fascinating stuff and gives you a look at just what drove him both as a person and a comedian.  Essential for fans of Robin Williams and for fans of comedy.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Okay bias alert.  I rate Bill Hicks as possibly the best comedian of the last 30 years.  Bill Hicks is a modern day poet and a controversial genius all rolled into one and this innovative, interesting, simply first rate documentary is a must see for fans, converts or believers that America has given very little to the world.  It’s clever, deletes deep into who Hicks was and leaves you with a huge appreciation of a true comic legend.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
My Generation is one of the best films of 2018 so far. Charming (well it is Sir Michael Caine after all) for sure but actually it’s more than that – the style, editing, use of archival footage (and of previous Caine movies) and narrative voice over combine to make a really outstanding film that is captivating from start to finish.  A faithful retelling of a dawning of a new age, My Generation sets a high bar for documentaries

Best Bit: Sir Michael Caine

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Barry Crimmins is not a comedian you’ve probably heard of.  But, sadly, the story of how he the renowned firebrand comedian is.  A film that covers abuse, betrayal and everything in between, Call Me Lucky goes deep into the psychology of a what makes a comedian.  It’s not always easy, it’s not always fun but it IS compelling and once again shows Goldthwait to be one of the best Independent directors working today.

Best Bit: Crimmins stand up
