Shaft (2019) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So nearly 20 years after Samuel L Jackson took over the role of Shaft he’s back once again for a sequel/reboot that has more in common with 21 Jump Street and Starsky & Hutch in tone than it does the original shaft films.  Arriving in the UK direct to Netflix just weeks after its US release and with a bucket load of poor reviews, expectations were VERY low.  Which makes it a real surprise that the film was as good as it was.  Yup it won’t change the world and it certainly won’t win an awards but Jackson & Usher have great chemistry, the support cast are fine and the script knows what it has to do and when teh film finally reunites 3 generations of Shaft you cant help but smile. Yup the villains are mere cardboard cut outs, the story wafer thin and the plot you’ve seen before.  YET I laughed, I cheers and I dug it.  Well worth  watch.

Best Bit: Jackson was made for this quipping type role

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Baywatch is a let down. The trailer, rumoured 21 Jump Street style approach and The Rock made this look like a slam dunk but at near two hours and with a tone that can never decide whether it’s a knock about romp or semi-serious take it’s much less the sum of it’s parts.  Oh and I wont even labour too much on the boat sequence fire CGI (some of the worst CGI I’ve seen in a big screen blockbuster in 20 years). It has it’s moments and the cast try hard but this could have been SO much better.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Okay so I have mixed feelings here.  Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates is far from terrible.  In fact at times when it does make you laugh it’s REALLY funny, the problem is those moments happen very rarely and falls somewhat short of the Kermode 6 Laughs test.  This makes it a very hard film to recommend.  Kendrick, Effron and co are charming enough, if a bit annoying at times, but you cant help but think we’ve seen this all before a hundred times.

Best Bit: Steam room & massage

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Er… Let’s Not? Look the trailer was funny enough, well enough to convince me to give this a go despite the generally scathing reviews.  Add to the fact I quite like Wayans & Johnson from their roles on New Girl… well it couldn’t be that bad could it? Actually it’s not THAT bad. It’s also not that good either.  The film has it’s moments but the joke (and the jokes for that matter) run thin within 4o minutes and sadly the film has well over an hour to go at that point.  In short: It’s a good idea for a TV show episode, a bad idea for a movie. Wayans & Johnson DO have charisma but you’re better off sticking to New Girl.

Best Bit: The first time the guys suit up is pretty funny.  By this film’s standards.
