Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021) – A Quick Capsule Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So… Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, one of my co-podcaster Ross’ favourite films of 2021 (and one of Mark Kermode’s LEAST favourite).  A mad cap comedy about two 40 something’s (you guessed it the titular Barb & Star) who end up getting involved in a crazy plot to destroy the Florida location of Vista Del Mar with mutated evil mosquitos.  With song and dance routines.  If that sounds a bit crazy you’d be 100% right.  In fact you can instantly see why this film defines the term ‘marmite’. It’s a hot mess, switching genres almost every two minutes and firing so many jokes a second that you never have time to even work out why the last 10 didn’t land.  BUT it’s got heart, it IS funny, the cast have crazy chemistry and if you go along with it there’s so much to enjoy here (even if it’s a bit long and too quirky at times for it’s own good).  So yeah… Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.  Double bill with Austin Powers.
