Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
The original Candyman still remains one of my favourite horror films. From its eerie setting and cinematography to its brilliantly played antagonist and unexpected narrative, it became (and remains) such an iconic film. It didn’t need its multiple lower budget sequels but, now almost 30 years later, the BIG question is does it need a Jordan Peele written reboot/remake/kinda sequel? Well for the most part yes as 2021’s updated Candyman manages to successfully build on the original story (whilst still being strong enough to stand on its own) whilst adding a whole new dimension to the Candyman mythos. That’s not to say it’s flawless – whilst the film is impeccably acted and visually stunning it seems to run out of ideas by the third act and jumps into a finale that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But until then this is a worthy update/sequel of what still is one of my favourite horror films!
