Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Archive, the feature debut of writer-director Gavin Rothery (who has credits on Moon and a bundle of computer games) , is a neat science fiction thriller that focuses on the story of George Almore who is working on a true human-equivalent AI in an attempt to reunite with his dead wife. It may be unwieldy at times and undisciplined at others but there’s a LOT of promise here, not least in the story telling which ends with a truly surprising series of events. Okay so maybe Ex Machina did all this better BUT that’s not to knock Rothery’s filmmaking talents… as a debut piece of work its pretty hard to fault. Strong performances and some great FX add to this. In short watch Archive as a precursor for what Rothery does next.
