Phil's Quick Capsule Review

The Stand (2020) – A Quick Capsule TV Review

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
Josh Boone’s update of Stephen King’s The Stand is an odd beast.  Whilst offering better production design and more episodes than the original 1994 adaptation, some misplaced casting and structural decisions coupled with a horrible tacked on final chapter, leaves you questioning if this version was needed at all.  Biggest disappointments here are the usually great Alexander Skarsgård as Randall Flagg (who just play his role as Eric from True Blood) and Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abigail who failed to register at all.  But to be fair almost all the cast are forgeable and I spent far too much time trying to remember who each was. Ultimately show runner Boone just doesn’t have the depth of experience to pull this off and whilst Mick Garris version has dated and suffers from bring truncated at times it’s still remains much better than this update.

Best Bit: Good production values, some nice story updated
