Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
I was about an hour into Mank when I genuinely thought I’d have to rewrite my top 5 films of the year. Between Fincher’s obvious love for the period and the top notch cast to Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor’s brilliant music and the films gorgeous black & white cinematography… Mank is unlike anything you’ll see this year. A breathtaking romp through old Hollywood. Sadly the film didn’t quite keep up that momentum but David Fincher’s picture about the writing of Citizen Kane is at time delightful and at time a frustrating watch, hamstrung ultimately by its lack of pace (ironic considering how long the original Kane screenplay was) and bloated run time. But still so much to enjoy and overall another win for Netflix in the 2020 Originals stakes.
Best Bit: Oldman is excellent but the music is outstanding
