Grosse Point Geek’s 2020 Review

Right then here goes  – this is my best and worst of 2020 – including my top five favourite TV series released in 2020, top ten honouree mentions, my favourite scenes of 2020 and what to look forward to in 2021

(be warned – some spoilers ahead!)

Top ten worst

  1. The Last Thing He Wanted (staggeringly poor)
  2. Ava (despite a decent turn from Colin Farrell this was borefest of epic proportions)
  3. The New Mutants (the final nail in the Xmen coffin)
  4. The Old Guard (total pants and a rip off of Highlander)
  5. The Last Days of American Crime (overlong, torpid rubbish)
  6. Bloodshot (Vin Diesel attempts to create superhero franchise – and fails dismally)
  7. Spencer Confidential (total crap plus its based on one of the dullest TV shows ever made)
  8. Mulan (forgettable and over budgeted)
  9. The Rhythm Section (awful awful film)
  10. Rogue (not the worst movie ever made but the CGI used to create the man-eating lion was inexcusably laughable – I mean really really really bad!)

Top Five TV Series:

  1. The Mandalorian Seasons 1 and 2
  2. Cobra Kai – Seasons 1 and 2
  3. Gangs Of London season 1
  4. The Undoing
  5. The Crown s4

My Favourite Scenes of 2020:

  1. Extraction – That brilliant unbroken, one take, 12 minute action scene wherein hard as nails mercenary Tyler Rake (a granite hewn Chris Hemsworth) engages in an utterly mental hell for leather car chase/gun fight/fist fight across the streets of Dhakar – much death and destruction occurs
  2. Extraction: Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth)  vs entire room of kidnappers  – an enormous bout of bone crunching fisticuffs that culminates in one of the baddies being killed by (you guessed it)…an actual garden rake.
  3. Cobra Kai S2 – Miyagi Dojo vs Cobra Kai Dojo – an enormous free for all tear up that erupts in the local high school –  by turns completely daft and totally edge of the seat exciting –  made even better with the use of some proper Bill Conti inspired music  – great stuff.
  4. Queen and Slim  – “you are my legacy”   – I dare anyone not to have a lump in their throat whilst watching this scene.
  5. JoJo Rabbit – “The scene with the shoes” – no spoilers, but this bit will break your heart.
  6. Gangs Of London episode 9  – the slo mo scene with grenade – now we know what happens when someone gets near a grenade with the pin pulled out – not for the faint of heart  – but what a scene!
  7. The Mandalorian S3 finale  – the sudden jump for joy appearance of two of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars Universe, then of course there’s that heart rending goodbye between Mando and little Grogu that has to rival Spielberg’s ET for one of the most tear jerking endings in history.

Once again id like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Phil Hobden for putting up with my vastly opinionated views on films and also extend my sincere thanks to everyone who visited this website throughout what has been a very trying year for all of us.

I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a peaceful (hopefully Covid free) New Year

The Austin Powers to Phil Hobden's Dr Evil, it's fair to say Will spends his life trying to convince Phil that Paul WS Anderson ISNT a bad filmmaker, that The Hobbit movies really are THAT good and, for the most part, Phil is wrong about most things. Which he is.

Oh and Will doesn't really use social. Ever.
